Good point phill badminton is probably the better game for us spearchuckers due to the fact if u are playing you are 1 keeping yourself fit and 2 The shoulder movement that you use playing badminton is good for us throwers well thats my excuse 4 playin last time i played squash me mate nearly had me head of with the raquet so decided not play again (i know b4 u say would of made an improvement)

I'm struggling to get a lot of actual throwing in at the moment as i'm coaching a sprint group but work has settled down a bit now so i'm going to try and get down the track a bit earlier. I don't think what I've been doing it's wasted time though, I think the key to me improving my throwing is to get back my speed and work on my run up so here's my av. week for January: Monday: 45min medicine ball session various throws and core stablity work followed by 1 hour circuit training session (body weight excersises) Tuesday: 45mins throwing session followed by speed endurance session with my group. Wednesday: Weights, Olympic lifts, bench, squats etc with another group I take for weights. Thursday: 45mins throwing concentrating on run up followed by speed session with my group Friday: Rest Saturday: Weights with my sprint group Sunday: Rest Not enough hours in the week!!

jim, do you not think 2 throwing sessions a week are enough??? or would you prefer maybe another on top??? it can be hard this time of year to throw well due to the volume and intensity of the training you do, good throwing comes with periods of rest and we certainly don't get that around this time of year! like you say jim there really isn't enough hours in the day..........i usually only shave onve a week as i just don't have the time!!!!!! and i love my beard! - i hate looking all scruffy!!! and if you see me......i had this type of beard WAY before craig david!!!! so don't start! ask parker he knows me, must of had it since i was 10!!! WHAT am i going on about, i'm just in a silly mood!!!! ;D

2 Sessions of throwing should be plenty but that'll be the first throwing i've done since October and if work picks up again that'll be the first session to go!
I have to make a choice between my own training and my group and after all the hard work they've done so far this winter i'm not prepared to drop them! I'm not giving up yet though i'll still be back on the run way by the time we get to the summer!

excatly jim! even if i wasn't suffering with this back problem i have i wouldn't be training as i spend the time i'd be training either working, earning the pennies, or my usual old throwing nights coaching at the track.......i'd maybe have the odd comp in the summer, probably the AAA's but that would be it.

Slinger, do you never feel the urge to just go out and belt a spear like you used to?? i had to stop throwing for 2 weeks whilst i was on holiday and i was itching to be throwing again...!!! James probs has got a hat on...its the Thorkildsen fashion! Or it might just have been cold at the track

....errrr yes is the answer to your Q!!! i was going to do the AAA's last year but my back was in spasm the week leading up to it, so i had to drop out!!! i even managed around 68m in my first training session 2 weeks before it!!! ;D however i do always throw every session when coaching at the track! i just can't help myself!!!! problem is they are only 600 and 700g javs so an 800 feels very heavy!!!!!!! ;D when you do something for sooo long you do not forget how to do it - it's just that it is very rusty, i can't hit it through the point for example for a while and the run up has no rythem..........give a javelin to steve backley and if he was fit, even though his last throw was at the olympics he would without doubt throw 80m+

I wear a hat at the moment as I have no hair and it's been pretty cold recently. I do remember when I was 14 or so that I used to wear a Redskins cap every time I threw until the day that my training partner through a spear through it in my back garden!
I did the sequence of photos with stills from movie maker in powerpoint. It looks a little odd as the camera was fixed in position as we were the only 2 throwing but I am going to capture some video that follows me along so that I can put a better sequence together.
Unfortunately the stills I have used are from a 3 step throw and don't highlight my technical flaws but if I can try and translate what I am doing there at speed I will hopefully be closer to a sound technique!

My block off a run up is shocking. After looking at videos it appears as though I reach a long way but actually miss my heel contact completely. I have been working on improving this and as the picture shows I am capable of doing it off 3 or 5 steps but running further than that I am not quite there although it is improving! The picture below is an example of my collapse. I appear to reach a lot further than I did in the picture in my signature which was off 3 steps. Any suggestions?

Looking at the two sets...
Two things...
stay taller from the last left lead /right foot drive. (you do in the slower approach.
while you stay taller, keep the weight back over the right leg longer. Drive the heel/knee/hip forward with the weight further back. In the 4th frame on the fast set, the leg and hip could have hit in sooner. Weight is a bit far forward.
It may help, so good luck.

Cheers Mack, thanks for the comments. Gives me something to work on!
Slinger, I'm bald by choice not age, although I do have a patch of mysterious grey hair lurking in my eyebrow these days!
