I've done the medicine ball quadrathlon again this week and thankfully I seem to be moving in the right direction (always nice!!!!) Performances from 26 Sep 05 2kg Standing Throw = 14.82 (8 points) 3kg Standing Throw = 13.65 (10 points) 2kg 3 Step Throw = 16.93 (9 points) 3kg 3 step Throw = 13.98 (9 points) Total 36 points Performances 12 Dec 05 2kg Standing Throw = 15.40 (9 points) 3kg Standing Throw = 13.30 (10 points) 2kg 3 Step Throw = 18.60 (11 points) 3kg 3 step Throw = 14.90 (10 points) Total 40 points Not really sure why my 3kg standing throw didn't improve must have hit it right first time round ;D but i'm quite pleased with the other improvements. The points and descriptions of the throws can be found at www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/medballquad.htm if you've not come across it before. I also did a standing vertical jump and managed 59cm, haven't done that before so don't really know if that's good or bad. How's everyone elses training going so far?

I think god may be a bit of an exaggeration, son of god maybe . Let me know how you get on nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry to bring the best out!! You were consistently throwing a bit further than me last season so if i want to hit my targets for next year I need to be at least on a par with you (if not ahead!!! ;D). P.s. I don't take offence at critism of my performances so long as it's constructive and helps me improve. If nobody makes any comment I would just merrily carry on and wouldn't find out how i'm doing until the season starts by which time it would be too late to do anything about it. I welcome your honest opinions cheers ;D.

I've done the medicine ball quadrathlon but I noticed I need to put a lot of effort in my technique. Since this is my first year of training on the event. But still I think I can be satisfied. There still a lot of room for improvement ;D
Performances 14 Dec 05
2kg Standing Throw = 15.10 (9 points) 3kg Standing Throw = 12.90 (10 points) 2kg 3 Step Throw = 17.10 (10 points) 3kg 3 step Throw = 13.90 (10 points)
Total 39 points

Nice one 400m guy looks like we're quite eenly matched hopefully i'll get to throw against you in the summer. Where are you based?
Are you still running 400's, that used to be my main event but injury, age and laziness put an end to it! What pb's have you got?
mine are
100m 11.5 200m 23.0 300m 37.0 400m 51.5

Mine are quite the same actually, but knowing that I am to big (both weight and length) for running I am switching to throwing.
100m 12.1 200m 23.3 400m 51.4
funny to see that I have a lot of trouble in the first few meters of the sprint.

Luckily for me this isn't the only thing indicating if you're a good thrower

A quad test tells you how strong your quads are and a med ball test tells you how well you can throw over-sized medballs. Don't see either as the be all and end all, what matters is how far the spear goes. Use these tests as specific physical indicators, not measurements of how good spear chucker you are. Remember that technique is 75% if the throw. I am trying to drum that into my own mind even if it is not completely true!

.........james, of course it's true!!!!! currently the 'in thing' now in uka is about getting our throwers athletic, some of our top throwers [all throwing events, not just javelin] are really, really strong but just aren't athletic enough if strength was the be all and end all then weightlifters and body builders would throw the furthest but of course they don't!!! lots of us spend most of our time this time of year in the gym and a bit at the track when it should be the other way round!!! we should be hammering medi balls against walls and doing jumps into sand pits etc not just lying on a sweaty bench lifting weights from our chest to full arm extension!!!!!!! if you do lift weights make it specific!!! ........good example is my wife!!! careful what i say now! she is going to the commonwealth games throwing discus she's been doing it for around 3 years, her pb is 57m. she's 5'10'' and weighs around 83kg which is about minimum for world class female discus throwers, technically she's ok and at that stage where she's still learning evry week! well she can bench 85kg, squat fully around 150kg and clean 100kg now these aren't very high, but they are improving but what she is good at is athletic things she can overhead shot 4kg to nearly 19m and standing long jump nearly 3m - she can even vertical jump higher than susan jones [Uk high jump record holder] and to make it worse she has a bloody six pack!!! - mine went a long time ago!! .... ;D it is these values that makes her a good discus thrower already not the weights she lifts............

James I wasn't suggesting this test was going to prove how good a javelin thrower i am but it does show that physically my training is going the right way.
I also find these tests really help motivate me during the winter, I compete far better than I train (in fact i don't think i've thrown within half a metre of my pb in training) and doing these tests give me that competitive buzz during the long winter months!
I'm even considering brushing my spikes off and doing a 60m at the indoors! Anyone else fancy a race? My best 400m relay leg of last season was about 2 sec quicker than i've run for 2 years because I was running against a fellow spear chucker and pride wouldn't let me give up!!

Sorry Jim,
I wasn't having a dig. Wrote the message after q skinfu of lager and vodka, not sure where the rational was from? It was more directed at posts in this thread and others where people were concerned about their test results. If these tests are positive thats a great thing - don't get me wrong. My problem last year however was that I was bigger and stronger and faster than ever but that didn't make me a better spear chucker because my technique wasn't worked on at all.
I think my post was more a dig at myself trying to make myself not make the same mistake again!

No worries James.
The points you made are very valid and it's important for anyone getting into (or already in) the sport to always remember the reason why we do all this training! To throw the jav and WIN!!
It would be a tragedy to leave your best perfomances on the training field
