Thnx, my PB is indeed 48.90m with virtually no technique, so this year i am working on my blocking skills and hip drive. Furthermore I am doing some weights since my speed and explosiveness could be much better, luckily for me it is rapidly increasing. So my aim for this year is to throw around the same distance with technique. Let hope all the work pays off.

how do all the standing throws, 3-stride throws and 5-stride throws compare an actual throw? Is there some data on it or perhaps a mathematical formula?

there's no strict formula that says for example if you throw 50m standing you'll throw 70m off a run up or whatever distance for that matter - but as a guide i would say if you can throw 50m, you should really be able to throw 35m standing, 40m off 3 strides and 45m off 5 strides - but that of course is a rough guess...
on comparing them in my mind it's sometimes easier to do what you want technically from a full run up as the speed taking you into the throw can help take you into the positions you want - throwing from short approaches with little or no speed is harder as it makes you have to work your legs harder to achieve the positions you want - this isn't a bad thing though as it's means your feet will be super good when on the full run up!!!
short approach throws are good to get warmed up before you go on to your full run and also are good to help with certain aspects of technique for example sightlines or keeping your arm up, simple things like this are great when working from short approaches as with them being slow they give you time to think about what you are doing.
full approach throws should be the main core of your throwing session and main aspects of technique worked on whilst doing these.

very true Phil esq!!
some people can throw 63m standing and let you know they can and throw 78(pb) so what phil is saying is just about true!!
i cant throw 55 standing!! although i did once nearly!!
whats yours phil!!
bout 45 - 50 i reckon as you're good off a runup!!

the 78m pb man you speak of has done 65m standing!!! and tbh don't think many men in the world have done much more than 70m standing.......put it this way 70m stand is awesome.......
my best stand - 45m tops! more like 43m on a usual basis........could do 58 - 60m off 5 strides - run up was everything.......

Show's how ineffective my run up is! I can standing throw 46-48m, throw about 56 off 5 strides and 58 off a sull run.

that's why james run up work is ignored at your peril!!!
usual session is........
walk up and down the field "fixed feet stands"
2 sets of two 3 stride throws,
2 sets of two 5 stride throws,
between 20 and 30 fuller approach throws......
about distances, some people are able to create force from nothing better than others - this means not a great deal in javelin throwing as we are creating force from moving already, that's where i was okay.......

I agree! I've been trying to do as many full approaches as possible recently. I think I threw about 120-150 times last Sunday, 75% of which were from full runs and my best throw with an 800 was right at the end. Started to feel a rythm and depsite being tired and aching all over the spear went further than all day!

little update for you all, I did some 3-strides again yesterday, some jave were starting to fly, but I am still trying to keep form and not use to arm-power and it went some 42m, so I would say that it is a big improvement compared to last year.
