every person's body has a physical limit of what they can achieve, we just have to find ways of 1. using it's ability in the most efficient way as possible - by means of good technique or 2. increase the body's physical ability - by means of exercise. dave parker's test results are very similar to alot of the world's best, for example backley could clean 145kg - dave can do 150kg, dave can do overhead shot with the 4kg shot 26m, we've heard makarov can do further......so he mixes all of his results with the very best, even his standing jav and heavy ball throws are very comparable to an olympic/world medalist - the only difference is that they have found a way to use what their body is capable of to it's best or nearly it's best and dave hasn't...............yet!!! - it's just a case of getting it right on the run way, doing things in the right order and transferring the speed on the run way into the jav.

Thats funny really, you wouldn't think that i am using all my physical ability if you take a look at my technique (just posted a couple of pics in pics and vids section) yet i seem to be able to throw as far as my ability suggests.
Unless of course my technique for the tests is just as bad as my javelin technique!!!
That makes me think about you out doing your test results, i bet you jav technique was way better than that for the tests?
Best of luck to Dave in making up the difference this year- its about time it really came together for him. I reckon that the CWG was too early in the year anyway so he should put that down to experince.

Being self critical is one of the ways to excel, in my case i haven't made any decent PB's for years and i used to be prone to sudden 10m improvements. When i do that again then all the bluster and Bull***t will be back. Until then i'll be meek and self critical.

I was ragging Sam about his weight recently and it led me to wonder what sort of difference that stuff makes to throwers so i thought i'd post up my profile according to this test so we can compare. If you other guys do the same it could be interesting reading, don't be embaressed if some of the scores are lame it might help to point out your weaknesses.
Height 1.82m Weight 90kg PB 64.06m
Test stats as at 10/04/06
Clean 115kg Snatch 77.5kg Front squat 142.5kg Overhead shot backwards 4kg 19.50m Overhead shot forwards 2kg 20.00m 5 stride jump 13.85cm

interesting stats H, what do you actually do in training (except bench press) then if you've not done any of those exercises?
Have you really never done snatch- its supposed to be the number one weight lift for Jav!

wez, H does alot of bicep curls with his shirt off, whilst looking in the mirror!!! and other various beach weights and i'm not too sure about his predicted jav being far?? reckon i'd have a chance of beating him

as of around the time i threw my PB......
clean....90kg snatch....60kg front squat....120kg OHS 4kg....20.29m FOHS 4kg....17.75m 5 jumps....12.50 - complete guess, really can't imagine i could do more than 2.50 per jump as my jumps are/were rubbish as i never did plyos [slap my wrist!]

i do some of the exercises but have never measured any of my overhead shot and forward shot!!
Never done snatch - but i've never been taught!!
Taught myself clean and did 100kg within two mths!!
I'm a decathlete now and will probably dedicate a bit of time in the winter to lifting properly etc! But as I made the crazy decision to change to dec in feb/march then I did'nt give myself much time to concentrate on the lifts.
As to doing beach weights?? I don't know about that... I can definitely feel my bi's and tri's disintegrating as the dec trg takes it toll and the weights sessions become less and less!! Still find time for a couple of bench sessions a week
Till the weekend gays, erm i mean guys!!
Mines a Makers Sour!!

On another note, bearing in mind age (40) and never ever thrown before until the other week (24+) and in training just under 30m. What could I realisticly expect to get to in the 1st year, and is 30 any good for a 1st time thrower?

Thats a good question, being good at throwing tends to be something you are born with, so how far can you lob a cricket ball for example. If you can throw that quite far it is a good pointer towards your general throwing ability as it requires relatively little technique. After that its a case of learning to throw the jav effectively and working on the more specific physical aspects.
Then again you are already past your peak years in terms of performance but i'm willing to bet that you haven't yet come close to fulfilling your potential with the javelin!! so theres potentially a fair bit of improvement left in the bag. As an example My Dad did a couple of seasons himself having never tried it before as a vet 50 and got himself up to 36m without doing any training atall beside comps.
BUT- heres my best advice have fun and don't go too mad in the beginning because its a rough sport on the body, the biggest improvements will come from improving technique and mobility at this stage.

Interesting views. Weights tends to be a subject that if you ask 5 people what they think, you'll get about 3000 opinions. Yes you need to be strong, but you also need to have flexibility, speed, mobility and core conditioning. All this backed up by a solid technique on which you can improve.
Tom Petranoff has a video that is excellent for "jav training/ preparation" and covers all of the weight stuff mentioned in this "thread", he places a big emphasis on med ball work as well. While not many of the current spearmen throw his way any more, he certainly wasn't any slouch and he never ever got injured.
Just food for thought!

Jeremy,
You are right about the weights thing- there are alot of different opinions out there, but i reckon the core of what people do is still pretty similar, and afterall everything needs to be tailored to suit the individual. That said i bet there aren't many 70m throwers out there who can't snatch 60kg!
