Hi guys, for those of you who've been training hard all winter and want to see what condition you are in without going to the effort and pain of maximum throwing, take a look at this link www.kolumbus.fi/pekorho/english/jtest.htmIt should roughly predict what distance you are worth and perhaps highlight your strengths and more importantly weaknesses. Have fun, but like it says don't get too obsessed because technical ability has alot to do with this too. That said- it has predicted my results to within 50cm the last 2 years running

HAHA!! I think we can safely say, that for most of us, the test is a little off. Says alot about our technical state doesnt it Jim?
C'MON DAV!!! GRRRRRR

well guys i did say it might show up some weaknesses.
The 3 T's
technique- technique technique............
The test is based on having a good basic technique, but of course assumes that your flexibility, and condition are also good (eg no injuries holding you back)
For example if you have some injury and or mobility issues preventing you from achieving a dynamic transfer of pressure from the block to your hand you might be giving away meters in the actual throw whereas your snatch and overhead shot scores could still be good.
We shouldn't overlook basic hand speed and mental state also- its only a rough test of your ability and alot of things which make a successful thrower aren't taken into account.
-BUT if your actual javelin results are way down on your potential you might want to start asking yourself why- it could be time to start concentrating a little more on your spear chucking

I'm not sure exactly what the calculations are but i think it is based on the test results compared to distance with the 800g jav of a whole range of throwers. It was developed by www.sul.fi the Finnish national sports association in conjunction with the olympic research body. Its part of a coordinated research project. BUT back to the original point- this test won't guarantee you any results, just as Phil points out above. He exceeded his predicted potential quite nicely so there is an X factor involved too..... maybe this link would be a more useful pointer towards your specific training schedules. Just input the distance you would like to throw and it will tell you what test scores you should aim to achieve. www.kolumbus.fi/pekorho/english/btest.htmIts made clear to me that my jumping is way off my other results so i will be focusing on that into the season

.....it just shows you what you are good at and what you are weak at - but albeit not specifically. If like smule you are way down on your actual javelin performance compared to the "virtual" on then it's obvious that lots and i mean lots of technical work needs to be done - at least something which will help the carry over of the power you have available into the javelin. it also says that whether the training you are doing is working or not! getting stronger and more powerful is a good thing but it must be developed along side and specifically related to javelin or it just won't transfer across in to the throw. personally i know i had to work more on my "physical" aspect in training but i neglected it big time as i'd always end up down the track throwing javelins, this could be one of the reasons why i threw well when i was 16 and 17 but slowed down after that? my theory is that if i'd developed my physical prowess at the same time as developing my technique i'd of carried on improving 5 - 10m a year? - i think this is the key........to first get a good basic technique and conditioning THEN develop the two together, complimenting one another so they can adapt to one's individual style. as i love anything "javvy" this is interesting stuff, cheers wez for sharing it!

On the same subject I heard recently in the Finnish media (this depends on if i understood correctly) that Tero Pitkämäki is aiming to throw 93m this year, which as i understand relates to improvements in his test scores over the winter. That will be interesting to monitor, but i wonder what it is that makes one person able to achieve or even excede their potential and another be way behind. If we could find the answer i'm sure theres alot of people including Mr P who'd love to know! In my case i have been able to achieve my potential to within cm's each year even though my technique is awful (just look at my display pic to see what i mean- that throw went 63m!) I think its mostly because i've got a good arm, so i should be able to surpass it if i can use the rest of my body too! Anyway i'm on test week now to see where i'm at before i start thinking about maximum throws again. I'll post my results when its over. So lets get some of the full results lists from you others so we can compare. I know last time one or two of you made up some of the results to fill in the blanks for stuff you hadn't tested, so lets do it properly this time.
