This raises an interesting point. Its going off the subject slightly but I wondered what people think about the Atkins diet.
I personally think that it is not a good idea to eat a near nil carb diet and exercise at the same time. For a start it is not a sustainable way of living. I also think there could be a complication with diminshing muscle mass as well with the body needing to go to the muscles to take energy.
I think that the best way to lose weight and become fitter is to eat a balanced diet (60% carb calories, 20% protein calories, 20% fat calories) and increase the cardio exercise (frequency not necessarily intensity) and maintain some strength training.
What are other peoples thoughts on this?
After all if mine/Sam's aim is to get lighter but with the real outcome to be fitter and more "athletic" we need to make sure that the way we do it is sustainable and works to both goals not just becoming lighter.

at the end of the day losing weight by eating shouldn't matter what it is??? surely it's all about the calorie content??? if you want to lose weight then eat less than before!!! isn't that the case, only problem is the food we love is stuffed full of Cal's - beer, sweets, pizza etc
couple a sensible balanced diet with regular exercise and you will lose weight - my thinking with sam is yeah great lost half a stone a week but will it stay off - hope it does mate and you continue with it but it's a query???

Dr Atkins died obese, and with serious heart, liver and kidney problems. No more needs to be said about that.
The only way of losing weight is to have a negative calorie balance ie use more than you consume. Seeing as fat contains 9 calories per gram, and carbs have 4, and with a far more ready form of useable energy, fats should be consumed sparingly. Basically eat better, and less (but plenty to exercise well), and exercise more. Simple. None of this poncy fatkins stuff!

Last night Sam had a doner and chicken kebab which he said was healthy as "all that's in it is meat and salad".
Admittedly I had one too but left most of the doner and I am eating the same as before but exercising more.
16 stone in a day.....

i'd like to point out that i wanted a salad but as i was going to james's house and he said that he was going to get dinner i'd eat there...but james doesn't do salads and the only other option was pizza.. now i have a wheat alergy and pizza is really not the best thing for me.. it bloats me out and lets face it when the time comes to go to the loo i'm called moses!!
the only other options were..KFC or Kebab.. seeing as the chicken was grilled and the meat was as dry as hell i felt that was a better option than a greasy drummer from kfc...plus i had salad...didn't eat the pitta bread.
let's discuss james's lunch habits shall we...
meet at the pub.. i have a king prawn and grilled steak salad and share some chilly fries. james has steak and onion baguette with chips and has some chilli fries too.. we both have a bud shandy.
now then the other day..that was not enough and james had to go to the chicken and ribs shop afterwards...
i understand the motives behind trying to disgrace my eating habits on one night out of the last 2 weeks but when you look at the options i feel i took the best one.
ps..i never had chips and burger sauce with my kebab though did i james....funny how you forgot to mention that
