I have heard merv is throwing at the world championships in a couple of days. Which is very impressive ! What sort of distances do we think he will throw?

knowing merv, anything from 60m to 81m although we'll all be hoping he get's it together for a throw in the 83m+ region and make the final like we know he has the talent to!

Indeed merv can be inconsistent at times, my heart wants him to throw 79/80 - a distance that I think will make the final btw, but my head says [and it's just a total guess] 74m and not make the final.

I feel for the guys out there now - it's absolutely lashing down and they are having to throw on in it.
A big shame for them to be unlucky like this IMO.

Been quite a lot of throws shown because of the rain though.. Hopefully Merv can pull it out the bag on his last throw!

65m and 61m so far with rain stop play. He deserves to be there but needs to sort his technique out I'm afraid to say so hw can be consistent.still got one to go though. Come on merv

With a best of 66.30 a serious case of stage fright, but a big learning curve in his first major c/ships

They did show his 66 on the BBC.
I hope he isn't too hard on himself, I hope he gets himself a beer or two tonight and has a good 'ol chat with his coach, watches Sunday night in the stadium and takes some inspiration from that.

Real shame. It's his first year at this level, so he will be cut some slack.
But he didn't have a great day at the Euro teams either, and there will already be question marks in the selectors' heads. Hopefully he'll be able to erase some of those at the next opportunity.
It was right to give him the opportunity, and he'll have learnt hugely from this.
Really not sure how Sunday will pan out. Maybe it's VV time.

Yes I agree. It's a huge step up to this sort of comp and everybody needs to feel comfortable when they throw. IMHO we don't allow our young up and coming throwers enough international experience. which would help tremendously when they are good enough to go to the big ones.

Feel very sorry for Merv. But his first major champs so a good learning experience for him and his coach.
With regards to international comps. Sorry Caroline I have to disagree to an extent. Whilst UKA dont do much for the rank and file, an athlete has to find the comps abroad. Huffy has had few probs getting overseas comps this year, so it can be done. It just takes a bit of 'neck' to ask and get invites.
Perhaps this is what Merv and a few others could benefit from next year. Any thoughts?

I agree with you Tom, Huffy has sought comps further afield and has been very consistent with his throwing this year in comparison to Merv This season Merv has been a big fish in a small pond and needs to seek out better comps abroad to further his big comp experience and improve his competition temprement

When I said 'international comps' I meant competing for GB, rather than some of the more minor ones around Europe. So, we have a male and female javelin thrower in the Worlds, but who do we have in discus, hammer, shot...? Just the odd one or two.
