Just checked out this mccain track and field show from channel 4 and saw Freya Jones, I trained at the southampton sports ground for a couple of months with her when I had more time.
I was like wow when I saw how she'd improved in a year, so now I'm going to go back to the track which is only just down the road for me and train a bit down there with bill, because if I can stick 10 meters on my throw by using a run up then I'm on to a winner.
Don't know if anyone on this board lives near me and has heard of Jack Bolton, he was pretty good, but not heard anything of him in ages.
Anyway just a random post with a hint of inspirational overtones if that's ok :-)

Actually, Freya's run up is her problem at the moment. She threw about 46m at the throws festival on one of her 5/76 stride run ups. She shortens her strides and slows down from her cross overs and then she thows her left arm to high, and drops her hand (some times rotating too much as seen in one of her throws at harrow from the back) and gets a very high angle of release which drags on the jav and it should go alot further. She also rotates around her collapsing left foot on her oplant so does not get the nmost out herslef. She will throw really big when she ges it right!

Freya was throwing at Kingston on Saturday and I was watching her from behind. I kept thinking she was almost bending double as she threw instead of driving up into the throw off her plant leg and releasing tall. Her arm was coming through fine - she holds the javelin back in the withdrawn position better than a lot of people - it was just her body pulling down on the javelin. I did not notice what her feet were doing and I did not have a side view. I think she only threw 40m. If she could just stay tall........

Actually if u adhere to zelezny and piktamaki coach the right knee shou D drive down into the left heel on a piking block! She collapses her left side and leg because she reduces her impulse stride and her left arm goes very high high thenbhas to come d own. Keeping tall is an I nteresting term but it is how u achie ve it and going from high to high doesn't work. Freya will be fine esp if she comes to uwic! Ahem

Cool cool, do all the best throwers come from there? or do all the best throwers head up there once they reach a certain level?
I mean would I progress faster if I were to go there if I was starting from scratch with some natural ability?
cheers, Elliot

Nije, A couple of things - I did state I did not have a complete view of Freya as I was warming up for the Match 2 javelin but I could see her body was bending over too much at release - there was no arch of the back and the javelin was already on a downward arc the moment it left her hand - it had no time to fly and it was not released at a high point. An arc started at a higher point from the same ground origin will come back down to ground farther than an arc started halfway down at the same origin. Secondly what do I mean by "staying tall"? Really it's a state of mind - it's the set of your shoulders and keeping the chest high as you run up - feeling proud of yourself - so that your core is lifted. In this position, it is so much easier for the legs to do their job in the cross or impulse stride, for the hips to come through, and then drive up into the throw off the plant to release at a high point. Freya didn't stay tall into her impulse stride. Your reply to my post seemed a little patronizing and I have seen Freya throw a few times this year, having competed in the same comp 3 times before. Saturday's was the worst technically that I had seen her throw this year. I only wish her the best and to look after her back as it looks as if she's straining it.

Elliot I coach from novice to elite and in most cases they make significant Improvements. Carrie thanks for your comments and I t is a shame u find me patronizing but ur technical appraisal is a little far off the mark. Her prbolic c urve does no t go down from her release and having seen her or the past year we r trying to eradicate ome of her faults. I have her on vid from many occasions and she is not the finished article but she has ome sort o confidence in my coaching as she approached me as all my athletes do so I'm sure we will sort It out bute is not as good as some of the technical stils we have on her over the winte r but when she gets it right she will b beating u by lots more! She is a very talented girl and is doing her work exp with me over next few weeks so let's see how she does for the rest of the season! Peace

Why is it the best? What facilities allow it to be the leading place?
Sorry I'm not familiar with it myself, I understand that there are a high density of good throwers I guess I want to know what other clubs aren't doing that they can be doing order to progress without athletes having to travel to wales...
Cheers, Elliot.

UWIC is the best because the facilities are very good, the community of athletes who train there all know each other and they are all progressing to higher levels of competition, plus the coaching is 2nd to none of course

I think Matti is a little biased ... there are good facilities and coaching at Loughborough, Bath, Sheffield and Leeds too, to name but a few!
