Can someone throw my javelin in competition withoe « Thread Started on Today at 7:24am »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Under the various rules of competition, what is the definitive answer to this?
If I get my own javelin passed by the scrutineer for personal use...is anyone allowed to use it, or do I have a veto?
a...in UK competition b...in international competition
Thanks...JC

Under AAA rules you don't have to let anyone else use your javelin. They can ask but can only throw if you accept.
Under IAAF rules all javelins in the pool can be used by all competitors without having to ask or gain permission.

The above is correct. In addition, I believe that in some comps (olympics, commonwealths) you can only use the "pool" javs (i.e. not your own). I'm sure they've got all the good ones!!
If you are throwing abroad, and if you are allowed to take your own javelins which then get placed in the pool after weighing in etc etc. It's worth keeping an eye on them as, if you're like I am and allergic to venetian terpentine (and all variants of "sticky" creams/sprays), you can "ask" that the others who wish to throw your's use chalk instead, or nothing.
2 cautionery tales. In UK I lent one of my javs to some Herbert who landed it tale first and bent the tale end. Result, I'll only lend one to someone who "knows what they're doing". Abroad someone went round grabbing everyone's javelins putting sticky stuff all over the grip. The rest of us put a stop to him.
My advice is to be a bit possessive and be aware of what's going on and be prepared! In a free for all there's nothing worse than "getting upset" if the person throwing your javelin is the one before you and it's still in the out field with the judges when the "clock's ticking" for your turn to throw!
On the whole javelin people are fair-minded and fairly polite about these things and on the whole common sense should prevail.

Good point. I have 2 identical javelins for that very purpose. I got sick and tired of the person immediately before throwing my javelin, so I bought another and take 2! ;D

I seem to lend my javelin out quite a lot, at BIG I think 5 of the 8 throwers threw it in one round. I never mind but do find it annoying when someone puts a different glue on it which messes the grip up!

- James they all used your nemeth cos it was the biz on the day!!! think jimbo needs one in his life!
jeremy's right at major games etc they have "pool" javs which are all brand spanking new! [think lasher did the euro juniors and was allowed to pool his own actually - is that right lash?] anyway my advice is that if you are in this situation ensure the list of javs includes the one that you use - if it doesn't get the nat. jav coach to try their best to get it in for you........if they can't then get using one of the spears on the list - when i went to the WJ's they didn't have any OTE's or nemeth's......i only ever threw my OTE tailwind, so when i was there it felt horrible not throwing one! also in the "pool javs" there will be a couple of each model - when you are told you can get a javelin from the racks - RUN! and get the one you want - don't be afraid just barge in [yeah it's rude, but this is serious!] and try your best to get it back every time as you'll get some right charlie putting tacky all over it when you use chalk! and everyone knows they don't mix!

In the Euro Juniors I managed to get my OTE tailwind into the pool, but you have to put 2 identical models of javelin in for this to be the case.
The reason being is that one has to be available in the warm up area and obviously the other goes into the pool to be thrown be anyone who wishes to throw it.
In the World Juniors though I had to throw the javelins that were in the pool as i couldn't get my own Javelins in. It seems to me that whatever rules the IAAF try to enforce, the national federations that happen to be running whatever the particular championship have their own set of rules regarding whether or not you can throw your own implements and whether or not other people can throw then if you can get them into the pool.
There are many grey areas with respect to implement usage and it would be beneficial to have a standard set of rules that we can all abide by which is set by the IAAF and fed down through the member federations. Therefore when we go to Competitions whether in our own country or whether abroad we all know where we stand with respect to this matter. Its not ideal finding out that you can't throw your own spears in a comp, but if you know far enough in advance, you can plan ahead by finding out the implement list and maybe getting used to having a different Jav in your hand, which you might not ordinarilty be accustomed to.
I suppose if you are throwing well though then it doesn't really matter what you throw though, but it is the feeling of the Jav in your hand that might add to the excitement factor.
I was doing a session the other week with Mick and I have got a pretty new Champion. He was obviously just coaching me, but for those of you that know him you can imagine what he said when he picked it up and had a feel of the grip!
"oooooo thats F*&%ing lovely that is"
It wasn't the fact it was anything other than a new champion that made him say that. Had it been an orbit, he wouldn't have even picked it up, let alone commented on it.
When I won the World Juniors in '98, I threw a nordic Super Elite 90 as there were no champions or tailwinds in the pool, and they were the javs that i was throwing back then. I guess you just have to adapt to the situation you are in and get on with it. I did know what was on the implement list, but I think I could have thrown anything that day!
Man that was a long post.

When I compete in leauges and open meets people use my javelins. I don't realy mind as long as they don't get bashed about on the floor, like this one girl did!

Robyn, in the UK, athletes can only use your equipment with your permission. Don't be afraid to say, "No", especially if the persom wanting to borrow it has suspect technique. I must say, there seems to be a lot more borrowing goes on darn sauf. In our little enclave up here, it rarely happens.

I had district athletics today. Took two of my own javelins, asked where i weighed them in, they had no clue. so I took them to another official, who then weighed them. When other people went to use them, I moved them. The officials said i couldn't do that! I stated that i was a well known thrower (what my coach always told me to say!) and that the rules state differently. So I got this other official across, who said no, I was right! go me! but they are yours, why should anyone else use them? especialy the expense of them spears. Our old decendants used a bit of sharp rock, on the end of a stick! but yeh, say no! best way - unless you train with them! s'what i do - or they are well known!

Willow, if you'd like to take a note of the following UKAthletics rule......
130(5) Competitors may use any implements provided for general use. Subject to any regulations laid down by the Promoting Body, competitors who wish to use their own implements must submit them to the Referee for approval. An athlete shall not use another athlete's implement without the owner's prior permission.
There's nothing like having a regulation number at the ready to make people think twice!

Yea javelins are expensive!!!!! I think the amount of mony you pay for them and then the cheek of people using them is annoying. I mean I took my javelins to open meetings and people new they where mine because they have my name on them!!!!!! I think they think that they are going to go futher than the other 1's
