Seems to me it tis the season for knee injuries.. soo i thought i'd share my little BIG problem
on tuesday the 29th of May i was having a fantastic session.. everything 3was clicking and i was actually fast in the last 3 steps instead of slowing down.
ONE LAST THROW i thought.... and felt a sharp pain and stiffness in my knee..
the next two days i could hardly walk
cut a long story short..
Strained the Medial Collateral Ligament and physio thought i had torn my medial meniscus.
Booked an appointment with the hospital and had an assessment on friday 29th of June. Ligament is healed up now but cartilage is definately torn
i have an MRI scan on the 10th of July and then it's a 2 - 3 month wait on the NHS to get it fixed
i'm hoping i can get to use my mothers private healthcare she has through her work..but i have to get the operation date from the NHS first before they will look at my case.

Today i had my MRI scan and i have to wait till Friday the 27th at 8am to get the results fo it.
after looking and looking at my scans i think i can see (with my untrained eye) somehting which looks like a bit of torn cartilage from the Medial Femeral condyle it's not a lot but the piece seems to then be in the medial side of the joint on several images of the scan
it's frustrating to have the scans here and not be able to find out 100% what it is that's wrong.. i know i'm just going to look and look at these scans for 2 whole weeks damn it

It could be worse Sam....you could have a little 13 year old daughter who has been waiting 2 years to see what is the matter with her foot! We have now found it to be the ankle not getting enough blood, so an op within the next 6 months we hope will sort it! So, put the scans away, and dont let it worry you, as you cannot change the outcome. You will make yourself go mad looking at them!

i'm quite depressed about this injury because i know my upper body is in great "throwing shape" (not in great shape though) i just can't do anythign more than walk up to the line and throw.. anythign more than that and i just get discomfort and pain and the next day my knee is sore/stiff..
I JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO THROW

I know how you feel Sam. My knee has had the full range of ops, including the big ACL reconstruction, so My knee hurts pretty much every time I throw or train.
The good news (this isn't a quick win for you though), is that when you get older and become a vet you get pains everywhere, so at least then you can concentrate on and smile about the bits that work!!!
Maybe there's a quicker may to have an MRI Scan read. Ask whoever is in the England Athletics for your region and point out that this is holding up not just you but the athletes that you help to win medals at English Schools! How can you demonstrate what you are trying to coach if you are being physically impaired?
All the best mate for a quicker solution.

Good luck Sam,
hope it's better than you think! ;D ;D ;D
Hope too that the "explainer" of the MRI scan results, spells out clearly what the situation is, how best to rehab it, start javving again etc etc
All the best

right people.
the problem WAS a complete horizontal tear of the posterior half of the left medial meniscus.
today i had it operated on..
aparently the cartilage was impeeding in the joint and i had a few bits floating about in there too..
all sorted now though.. off work for 3 weeks..which was a shock
haven't had to take any pain killers or anything and i haev been walking about unaided.. tbh i feel really good about it
here's to the recovery process!!!

recovery is going really well i have about 110degree rom in my leg at the moment but that is restricted because of the stiches which i will have removed this week.
swelling is nearly all gone now
i have noticed that my left quad is feeling really weak at the moment.. so there is loads of recovery to do on that.
i have lost nearly half a stone in the first wek of recovery too.

ok stitches are now out. i can walk about pretty much freely and my ROM has improved to almost the same as my right knee.. it does feel a little tight and sore when forcing the ends of the movement (extension and felxion) but that is to be expected and i will not try that much.
Next week i am planning on going out on my bike for a short period each day increasing the time each time i go.
It has been suggested to me that i go and use a pool to aid my recovery but i am a bit public pool shy so i am just going to do some work on the bike and get the theraband out.
the next week i will be back at work and i will be in the gym each day at lunch on the bike in there increasing the load..
the week after i want to be able to do at least a fast walk and maybe a slight jog.. obviously i will not do this if i feel that my knee is not upto it.
I have lost over half a stone now through healthier eating since last monday and i will continue this eating through this weekend.
next week as i get more active i can change my diet slightly (i have been having cereal for breakfast and lunch and having a healthy dinner) to include a meal which is a bit more substantial at lunch time.
James everard said that this could be the turning point in my throwing career and i believe he is right.
i feel more positive now than ever before and i have been doing everything i can do help myself (bar going to the pool...eeek)

so far i have had one session on the bike and i also went in the gym and did a hell of a lot of quad extensions on the quad machine.. i used only one plate (very light) but did many reps till my muscles burned.
i have also done a lot more walking this week (more than i have done since the operation)
I have been doing free standing squats to almost full rom and i have also been doing single leg half squats too. got to get these muscles strong!!!
