out of interest how many of you use back braces and why ? i ask because all the top guys wear them and i bought one cos im easliy led ! i have heard elsewhere that you should only wear them if your injured. your feedback would be appreciated

Back supports provide heat to the back muscles which helps keep them injury free whilst they are healthy apart from the "mental" confidence aspects of wearing one . They are also a great tool for ripping off and slinging at the opposition when throws dont go to expectations (only kidding of course). Most top throwers are not injured but wear them for the above mentioned purpose. ;D

I used to find throwing my boots at the end of the competition more useful ! At least my coach knew to stay clear till I had calmed down. I personally didnt like using a back brace when i tried it but I think a lot of athletes do use it for confidence more than due to injury. I went through a similar thing using a knee brace following an injury. My knee had healed but I just felt better wearing it almost just in case.

does the same apply for elbow braces ? i have an injury there but heard they may badly affect my technique by restircting the range of movement of the throwing arm.

It depends how ridged a support you use on your elbow. Where is you elbow is the pain and has it been diagnosised? If its a result of your technique then a support wont help that much. I know one ex-training partner who used every support under the sun until he finally listened that he was whipping his arm across after release which damaged some of the tendons inside the elbow!
If it is too keep the muscle warm a tubular grip bandage may help you rather than shelling out for a full support. Best bet is just to try in training and see how its feels.

thanks for the info. the problem is a mix of poor technique (first season) and overtraining, ive been doing about 14 hours a week most of the winter and my muscles are pretty knackered.
It has been aching for a few weeks but got far worse as i got my new jav last week and in an ill thought out attempt to throw it out of the stadium.... out of the county in fact ! i did something to the elbow and basically hyperextended it..... i know this is meant to sort of happen but believe me not looking like i did ! (picture an escaped mental patient throwing a wet fish like his life depended on it !)
its been rested fully for what will be 2 weeks by the time sundays meet comes around and should be ok but i reckon i'll go for the support bandage like you suggested just to keep it warm.

explain the full extent of your injury in the injury section and i'll get my physio to give you some advice...his main point will be that you visit a physio......Remember though he will not give you a diagnosis over the internet anly advice on what to do to strengthen it Sam
