hello to me it looks like the pictures were taken at different stages during the final step before the throw. in the first picture he's just starting to push through with the hips and his shoulders are squaring up to the direction of the throw. The 2nd picture is just before he goes into the 1st pics position....if that makes any sense. ???Both more or less the same position well thats what i think... good question though and cool pictures lets see what anyone else thinks? Hi Sarah, Great pics but i can see why your confused..... the arm is exactly the same in both.... and thats exactly why he's great ! The other guys who posted were right these pics are from different stages in the throw. In Pic 1 backley has completed his drive of the right leg and has entered fully into the block step, note that his right FOOT isnt even driving anymore as his spikes are off the ground ! at this point he's using hip hips and midriff to pull his body round and open up his chest to the field. The key here, and its one of the most important things to backleys success, is that his arm is still yet to strike and remains behind him making the scary looking 'bow' shape your coach has been bleeting about that seems impossible ! so in pic 1 the arm is great and the key to success is 'last and fast' the arm must always be used last and fast... keep repeating still you get bored !!!!!!! in pic 2 backley is earlier in the sequence as his chest is still closed off from the field . although we cant see his feet he is probably still driving off the right foot and just landing his plant. the arm is still superb though as it sits back relaxed and ready to strike through the fullest range.... last and fast.... great pics ! below is a link to a uk coaches website with an excellent frame by frame of backelys technique with expert analysis, hope all this helps.... www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/javelin/photo.htmby the way i just sound like i know what im on about but im actually rubbish at javelin ! more of a do as i say not as i do sort of person ! i look like a monkey chucking a wet fish when i throw ! ;D
