Hi all, Basically my son as started throwing javelin recently and as asked for a javelin ball. What I'm after is some advice as to whether they are worth purchasing and if so what weight should i get for a young beginner .. Any advice in general on training equipment would be appreciated. He is 12 years old and 5ft 4" in height if that makes a difference to weights and size of equipment needed. (please excuse my ignorance on the whole thing i to am learning ) Many thanks in advance guys..

no need to apologise......... as your son is 12 he'll be throwing a 400g javelin so a light ball is needed........balls can start as light as golf balls all the way up to 2 - 4 kg shots................needless to say your son won't be needing the heavy ones!!!!!! ;D a 400g ball is relatively inexpensive and can be obtained from various athletic equipment places like neuff, stadia sports or even the javclub's sponsor!!! [ ] other things like light weight batons, light javelins, canes etc can also be thrown.................any other Q's don't hesitate to ask!!!!

oh yeah, some javelin balls come with a little notch and these are called knocken balls and to be honest i don't like them...............i much prefer the simple round balls either rubber coated steel ones or rubber ones filled with sand or ball bearings.........they cost about £8 - 15 each depending upon weight.

You could also get a mini rugby ball. When he practices throwing this, the straighter and less wobble the better, it helps iron out a few bad habits. I use one when warming up.
