I'm sure we all have training sessions were we felt relaxed, focused and comfortable and threw really well - without seeming to do much or try very hard? yet in competition where we tried 'hell for leather' we botched it up, i for one did in my biggest ever competition.
channeling aggression into the throw is a strange thing, as if i watched videos of myself throwing in training i was technically better than competition yet in competition i would throw a bit further - only a bit but still further..........this has led me thinking if i wasn't as pumped up BEFORE the throw maybe i would have had better results? maybe if i'd let all my aggression out at release then it would have been technically better with crucially the same aggression and focus as a throw were i was pumped up prior to the throw???
what got me thinking about this was that mike, the lad i coach is notoriously laid back and too placid so he was trying to get psyched up and 'aroused' and yes the javelin went quite far, but technically it wasn't too good - so what should i/we do? leave the technical stuff or work on the arousal level? i think we mustn't let the technical level slip and my thinking is that the arousal level will rise with a competitive environment.......
maybe some of us are too aroused and too excited that technical skills learned are forgotten and therefore wasted - food for thought me thinks!!!!
watch some vids of the top throwers - on their good and best throws i can't recall seeing any of them 'going nuts' before running up, can you? yes they look focused with eyes glazed and determined, a look of relaxation springs to mind as they run and then at release does the "expression" come out.....
just a few things to think about and maybe one or two of you are in the same boat???
