they are designed to help an athlete learn how to throw through the point, if you dont they dont fly very well at all....takes a bit of getting used to, with them being soooo much shorter than a real jav. But id recommend them for indoor and outdoor use with any age or ability ;D

About how far do they go compared to how far you can throw a regular javelin?

never really tried to lob one really far but have put them out at about 40m... so thats about 10m less than what im putting a real jav out. could probably put them out further ;D

I agree with the about 10m less than normal estimate on those.
I use them indoors with various athletes but also they've been used as replacements to javelin in schools where "proper" javelins aren't permitted. There not as good as the real thing but at least have some weight in them unlike the bull nosed foam variety
