depressing as it sounds with the olympics around the corner the summer is coming to an end and my clubs last event is in just a few weeks time. This will by my first real winters worth of training coming up over the next six months and i'am looking for any pointers on what i should be doing.
As im new to the sport i dont have the specific muscle development that most of you will have built up over the years so some tips on the quickest fix for this problem would be good. time wise i can and have trained upto 6/7 days a week and have access to every type of facility be it gym, track or swimming pool available. any tips no matter how small would be greatly appreciated.

JB - what training have you done in the past. What do you enjoy doing, what do you think your weaknesses are and what are your strengths

all you have to do through the winter in my opinion is firstly condition your body then you go on to snatches and cleans and general power exercises. through the winter you don't need to throw more than once a week.

JB...most throwers tend to split the year into the following; Sept: Active rest (any kind of sport or activate...mines been partying at the weekends! Oct/Nov: Conditioning/ Endurance (light weights-high reps, longer runs, curcits etc etc) Dec/Jan: Gross strentgh (heaviest part of the year for weights etc etc) Feb/Mar: Specific strentgh Apr/May: Technical/ Speed (lighter weights/med ball etc etc) If this princaple is used or not its best to work on your weaknesses, they will make you a better thrower in the long run.

hi guys thanks for all the responces, got some good tips. im sitting down with my coach tonight to hopefully finalise my winter programme. im very lucky as i have an excellent coach who as well as coaching javelin is also a professional strenght and conditioning coach.
will break the year up as ant suggested and do a lot of weights work and gen fit to start but things are hindered at the moment due to a couple of niggling injury's... a dodgy rotator cuff and shin splints but will get better soon i hope
as far as strenghts and weaknesses go i would have to say they are pretty much all weaknesses and no strenght apart from drive and determination. i only started throwing august last year and this was my first season.
things have gone well, ive shed 5.5 stone and put 16m on my pb from then but still have a lot to do. my main problem is a lack of specific muscle development cos i have not done this event for years like most and some muscle groups are javelin specific and hence underdeveloped in me.
main aim this winter is to get in top physical shape shake off any injuries after a tough 1st season. strenght wise my legs are good but could be better, my main focus over the 30weeks of winter will be back, chest and core strenght training as i have trouble holding my block and action with the extra inertia of a full run up involved.
technique wise i've yet to join all the dots but wont be able to do that till i get myself a little stronger. i will post my training schedule as soon as i get it finalised and would apreciate some feedback.
thanks for all your help so far
