my question (without checking the links above) is how much effort should go into warming up before a competition? Can you stretch too much?

generally i dont do static stretches before a comp...or in training for that matter. i do dynamic stretches/plyometric stretches and drills. i have found through my own coaching/competing experiences and from reading up on this that too much stretching before a competition can hinder your performance as the muscles are too relaxed to give out the power you require.
as for how much is too much it depends on the athlete....its a trial and error thing (couldnt think of any other way to word it sorry) you need to do enough to feel warm, yet not soo much that you feel tired from it. As athletes you should have some sort of warm up routine that works best for you. if youve done it for years stick to it...if its not broke dont fix it.

The only thing I've changed in my warm up in the last few years is doing more throwing. Since at most competitions I only get the chance to do 3-5 warm ups, I find it beneficial to throw a cricketball at the fence for a while or sling a Vortex ball at Sam. It just means that my arm (particularly elbow) is ready for the action as soon as I get out there to throw.
I only really concentrate on stretching areas that feel tight - normally my shoulders as well as having a good stretch in my legs.
