Hmm, mostly its best to forget about the arm when throwing except to make sure that it is above the shoulder lining the jav up against your eye. Are you losing the point when throwing?
Which ankle are you talking about twisting? the foot of your plant leg should ideally point straight ahead in the direction of the throw as twisting can cause some nasty injuries.
Would it be possible to video one of your throws and post it up as its pretty difficult to comment on such specific things without it and the chances are that alot of small problems can often be fixed by one bigger but more simple technical adjustment.
Also try not to get annoyed (even though it is probably pretty annoying) because you need to always be relaxed and in a positive state of mind when throwing in order to achieve good technique.

By the sound of it, your Coach is trying to get you to learn to block?
I too come to a sudden stop when throwing the Javelin, even though I know what I SHOULD be doing. I know I should be trying to make my right foot active, bring the right hip in, then block, not worrying about what my throwing arm is doing! I HAVE NO BLOCK AGHHH!
I suppose the right foot twist of the ankle is his way of explaining trying to bring the hip in too?Sort of stubbing a cigarette out with the right foot to make the hip active?
No doubt the peeps on here will explain things for you, but like Wez says, it is far better to get a vid of your thow up so they can analyze.
One more thing, dont get angry or annoyed. It does not work, keep relaxed but positive!

Hi Tez,
And well done for posting your question.
Wez and Chris (LBA40) are right to ask for more information (maybe a video). Difficult to give good advice without understanding the question(s) properly.
It seems like you're throwing quite a long way already which is great. If you are a right-handed thrower then your right foot is "key" to the throw. And vice versa if you are left handed.
What do you mean by "follow through"? If it's your throwing arm then that should follow though in an arc towards your right knee (as opposed to your left knee), this will help throw the javelin straight.
Depending what you mean by stopping, this is a good thing otherwise you will foul the line.
There's lots that needs to happen, and in the right order!, to throw well, and you must be doing some of things well to throw as far as you do.
If you can make it to th jav fest this weekend at TVAC in Eton, then you'll be able to talk to a lot of people who can help, and want to help.
If you want to talk to someone in the meantime then PM me with contact details and I'll call you.
In any case it's probably a good idea to get a relationship with your coach that helps you understand the imformation he gives you, and also allows you to ask the right questions so that you know what you are working on (Which one or two things at a time).
Good luck anyway. What club are you with and where are we based?
Hopefully I can help or find someone else who can.
Jeremy

I'm based up in Sheffield.
The arm thing is blocking I just remembered I know when I throw I throw like a discus thrower (because I am one) so I pull to the side Sort of...
What I mean by follow through is I'll finish my crossovers, stop dead and then throw... It's flipping annoying and I can't sort it!!!
I'll try my best to get a video I know how helpful they are, And thanks again for the replies
I've been told the reason for my distances is my arm because I have a heck of a fast arm than helps...

brian [beepee] only goes to sheffield at short notice to train with david parker and rotherham is where he lives, yeah. from what i gather he is a very busy bloke who is out most nights doing the club thing, so actually getting to see could be a problem! ;D - he's a much sought after guy is there anything wrong with your current coach?

Nooooooooooo I was not suggesting that she change coaches, just asking the question if he was not from there! I knew it was close, and if she was indeed coached by him already!

Hello Tez.. ;D yes I do go down to D Valley most Thursdays with Young David Parker and Felix Hatton as they live in Sheffield and its easier for all of us that way. I myself live further out heading towards your neck of the woods near Crystal Peaks, not Worksop I know but not too far.
I have seen you throw and I think that Alex is doing a fine job with you Luke, Hannah and all but sometimes we as coaches forget to explain things a bit better than we actually can and we can forget that you are only just learning the event and may not fully understand just what we mean plus as youngsters you do not generally ask us any questions either so we think that you have understood . I did see you throwing last week and noted that you do tend to "sweep back" the left side whilst throwing during the release part of the throw and Alex is trying to find a way to stop you doing this. If you do not "block" the left side of your body and tend to spin around the left foot instead of "going passed it" then it stops a lot of the velocity being channelled into the javelin hence losing a fair bit of distance and this is why you get the feeling that you are not chasing after it. By not "blocking" or in more simple terms not keeping the left side really solid (so that your whole right side passes the left shoulder going in a forwards motion during release) then you are more likely to get injured as well.
A simple trick that will get you used to blocking is to hold a javelin in your none throwing hand (in your case the left one) and hold it horizontally way out in front of you at full arms length whilst you throw probably 3/5 step throws. You cannot pull this back whilst throwing because it would hit your body so it learns you very quickly as to what it feels like to "block" and to be honest it wont probably feel all that good to you because you do not normally block so its going to feel really weird at first. Ask Lee to show you as he knows my old tricks off by heart and he can demonstrate it for you.
The flicking of the right ankle is again one way to get the right hip to go forwards before the left foot hits the ground/plant but it should not be hurting you so maybe you are doing it too forcefully especially if you are getting pain from it. The other way is to not try and turn the ankle but think more about turning the right knee inwards as you land on the right forefoot which will achieve the same outcome. I think you will be a really good spear thrower when you learn how to do these things and everyone gets frustrated when things are not going as well as you think they should be but be patient and eventually things will start to gel together and you will have no problems getting the Esaa standard that you want and more.
OOps just one more thing coaches dont tend to interrupt other coaches whilst they are going through their sessions as it can be seen to be a tad nosey and not good for the welfare of the interfering coach so I am not being ignorant by not saying anything when you see me down there Im just looking after my own welfare.
Take care and throw well. Give Alex plenty of respect and he will do ok by you hes a good lad and a good athlete (still) as well... ;D

Lol ..bless your sox. My other lot do the "steps" run for a warm up.. Next time you see me you will notice that I spend a lot of my time holding my head in my hands so frustration is not at all unique to athletes, believe me.. 8-)that's why my hair is white...apart from the old longevity as well of course.... now my lot did mention Jurassic somewhere in the conversation....and shut up Slinger before you say anything that you may regret.. Oh Im off to hassle the Sheffield Eagles rugby lot again tonight they have become a good distance aid for David who is trying for the magic distance..tra la la lar ;D
