hello, my name is Scot Adams, i am 15 years old and have been throwing the javelin for just under a year now. although i know this is not a great length of time, i seem to not be improving. i have a Pb of 41.19m and this is not that great for under 17 males. i have recently had a great deal of trouble reaching 40m again, i have no idea why and it is rather frustrating. i know one of my problems is hen planting my right foot ( i am right handed) it is not straight therefore my chest is slightly turned. i know this is not a very Good question as there could be many answers but, is there anyone who has either had this problem, or are suffering problems that may have any helpful tips for a under 17 male thrower, throwing just above 40m? many thanks Scot  |

If you are having trouble getting your chest facing forwards into the throw then the problem will be from your right foot not turning forwards to work your hips. On your impulse stride ie. the first of the last 3 strides, you should turn your right foot forwards so that it is pretty much parallel to your upper body which should be side on. By doing this it is easier to turn your right foot and work your hips whilst leaving your upper body side on. I might be repeating myself a bit but I'm trying to put it fairly simply! The right foot should turn to face forwards, your ankle should work which should have a ripple effect working your hips and then creating a C shape with your right leg behind and your right arm back. Try and find some stills of Steve B throwing and you will see what I mean by the C shape. Steve compares this to an arrow firing out of a bow. The tension created by the right foot working and leaving the right arm behind will give you a big pull on the jav. It is important your left side does not collapse otherwise it will result in the big C shape you have created collapsing and you will lose all of the force and range of pull on the jav you have generated. A good recent example I can think of with an awesome left side is Andrus Varnik's winning throw in Helsinki. His upper body is perfectly front on when after he has released the jav and he loses nothing out of the left side. Hope this helps a bit. See what the others think! hey james, thanks very much. i have been told about the right foot needing to be straight before, i have training tonight so will try the "c" shape thing,
