Congratulations to Steffi Nerius for a great performance in Berlin today. At 37, an age at which most people are thinking about retiring, she hit a great first throw of 67.30, enough to beat all the younger ladies, and to win her first world gold after 3 bronzes.

when i saw her throwing in halle this year i thought she could throw big. She was delaying the hit too much and doing 60m+ jab's. She obviously sorted out her timing. It's a shame she's retiring though and maybe this gold and the distance she's thrown will give her a boost to continue for a bit longer.

She threw a nice one at Palace, but I really didn't see that coming. Great stuff.
If she was planning retirement, she should stick to that plan. Going out at the top a la Martin Johnson would be a classy way to finish a great career.

Martin?? Indeed, I doubt she'd never bother if she threw a javelin ever again in training never mind comp - what a way to finish the sport. Home crowd, second best throw ever [?] at the world champs after years of frustration being close to winning in the past......awesome!!!

Yes, Martin.
He retired from international rugby straight after leading England to the 2003 world cup, with legend status safely secured.

Phill,
Did you think he might have meant Michael Johnson? He made a bit of a name for himself in Track and Field....and left it at the very top. He is an extremely accomplished expert on the sport as well.

Well yea, that's why I asked "martin?" ;D
...but I know GTB is a big athletics fan and wouldn't get HIS name wrong! - hence my cheeky wink!
on a side note - just this minute Greg Rutherford has just jumped 8.30m! - I wonder how Chris Tomlinson will respond to having his UK record broken first round of the qualification!! - he's in the other pool, but will bound to hear of it...wonder if it'll be detrimental or a boost!?
