A little bit left field this one but I'm curious to know what's the heaviest defeats people have had, since I got right royally mullah'd yesterday. NoEAA Lge Division TWO ! Shot 1 Myerscough, C. 20.33m 2 Brown, D. 10.47m !!! I make that about 51% of the winning distance ! A few years ago at the Sussex Counties hammer, I just topped 30m....and Mick Jones just topped 71m. That works out at 43%. One Northern league match at Sheepdip Stadium, Carlisle in 1991 I triple jumped over 12m the same day Edwards hit 17.43m. Probably the heaviest loss I've had in javelin was to Mick Hill in the Northern KO Cup at South Leeds. In a rare excursion over 50m I still didn't get within 20m of him. But hey, if you're gonna lose, lose to someone good.

1988 UK Champs at Derby. I was at my first national champs and I had to come up against one Fatima Whitbread! I threw a then PB of 45m and I believe she threw 73m! All you could do was watch and learn!

Prob a couple of yrs back after i threw 68 at Lufbra, i went to the intercounties on a rainy mucky day and I knew that my elbow was screwed but thought i could get away with it and threw about 30m ;D
Think Dave might have won with 68/69.

I know I was chuffed when I threw 81.48m to place 3rd in the bislette and the only time i beat mick even if it was over shadowed by jan Z who threw 92m world record with an illegal nemeth. Now if he had thrown a sandvic.... i reckon he'd thrown 91m! He also threw 95m in sheffield WR when i threw 77 something in 1994 he threw the same and I threw 61m as I damaged my shoulder warming up chucking about 84m which was the only time i never made a top 8(apart form Olympic qualifying)
So you don't have to throw 30m to get your arse kicked!

I didn't think I'd see you adding to this thread Mr Bevan !
The difference is, for me, when I get that kind of a tanning it's because I've come up against someone special which is a red-letter day for us mortals.
(I guess big Jan Z was pretty special too !).

I can assure you I am mortal as is jan but it goes to show how ever good you may think you are there is usually better. Jan has taken good arse kickings as well so nobody is immune! I remember Gary Jenson throwing 70m as a u17 and i threw 42m and a few years later I remember him throwing 68m and me throwing a 78.60m pb in a throws international in a place called tingvoll in norway which was one of the most bizarre places we probably ever threw at! It was basically a coal tip with some tarten nailed down like carpet!

Tingvol - coal tip - tarten nailed down - Tessa didn't want to throw because of - remember it well Nige - you banged that 78m so straight that had you done that at Brum in '92 it could have been 84+. That was the trip you knocked out a few tunes on the old 'joanna' . Shame the beers were so so expensive, unlike Portugal Wonderful countryside there, truly breathtaking and as ever in Norway, not an ugly fat bird in sight! ;D

My last post was personal to Nige so sorry, so now back on topic! I got thrashed when Steve did his 90.98 at CP in '91 I think it was. He did 2 86m throws with the Sandvik and he walked over to me and said 'I can't hit them any harder than I have'. I said chuck the Nemeth, which he didn't like, but he did. 89m followed by the 90.98m I did around 74m! Boo'stard! ;D

Gary, that was a great trip apart from the facility. THEY called the pv off it was dangerous and the long jump pit was basically coal dust so everyone looked like coal miners after two jumps and in white gb kit! But apres throw was grea as we both remember! I think steve didn't like the ote's as he gave me a couple which he was given and didn't like them. I didn't either. Matti has it now. We all threw the sandvics but mark did throw the ote eventually.

As someone who's never taken part in overseas competition it's interesting to hear some inside info on it. I've always (naiively) thought that facilities at international comps would be first class; how different the truth is !

Most of the venues were first class but you did get the odd one that was a suprise. Normally just throws meets where the runners didn't need a track ;D
Still got an OTE Nige - I'm sure Steve gave me it too!!
