from the "betterware" catelogue i have used "sticky stuff remover". Also surgical spirit is good at getting it off or if you are carefull you could use white spirit!

Lighter fluuid will also do a great job on this.
BUT be sure that you put the fluid on a cloth, don't pour it on the spear - if it runs down under the grip it will loosen the tackiness between spear and grip and will eventually make the grip slip and come away.

Doogie, the very best thing for removing tacky is Turpentine as thats what its often made with anyway, proper tacky is made from Resin and Turpentine is a natural solvent also derived from Resin. Go to your local art shop to get it, its often called Terpentine gum also.
You can use stronger stuff like paint thinner from the DIY store and various other synthetic or petrol based stuff too but just be aware that the paint on your jav is just as vunerable to it as the tacky.
Depending on how bad your tacky situation is you might also be able to just warmup your jav and scrape/wipe off the worst of it when it gets soft.
By the way anyone who wants to make home made Tacky, can buy some Turpentine and mix in with it either Pine resin (free from trees, just nick one with a knife and wait) or Violin Rosin which you can buy from Music shops. You can vary the consistency by adding more or less Turpentine. You may need to heat it up a bit when making it if it won't dissolve properly.
Always store it in a small air tight container to stop it drying out.

Mate - just be really careful. Take your time when doing it and no liberal application of any tacky remover.
Try putting a cold pack round the 'taky'ed' area first to try and freeze/harden the tacky to make it more brittle and using a small iron brush to scrub it off. It is a far safer way of doing it and my preferred method.
