There are a number of different exercises you can use, Morgan. Here's 3 that I employ; Using the lane line, sort of skip up its length trying to turn your hips from side to side seeing how close to a side on position you can get. Start off slow and then speed up aiming for accuracy of movement. Your feet will turn side on as well for balance but that doesn't matter here. More specific to javelin is a drill called tortionals which is a bit like a kareoke movement but you concentrate on snapping the hip forward when you move your right leg (for right handed throwers)forward in front - while you are holding the javelin in the withdrawn position! This will get your spear control going! The third option is dance - ever considered a Salsa or Samba class? You might laugh but have you seen the hip movement of the professional male dancers on Strictly? I've always loved dancing, mostly in clubs but at my age now its in the privacy of my own home and it keeps you very fit! ;D Hope some of this helps!!

Carrie, your forgetting one other very jav specific activity for the hips also, but i think Morgan might be a bit young to start practising that one. Oh yes and then when hes old enough he could try Snatch too...the lift i mean For now though i quite like doing a medball chest pass, i practise hoping sidwways on from an impulse stride and snap the hip through onto my block leg and if you just hold the ball on your upper right chest it pops off when you get the blocking reaction. I use 1-3kg balls in summer and its a nice little footwork drill too.

There's another med ball drill where you put the ball on the hip, stand a foot or 2 away from a wall and use the hips to drive the ball at the wall with a jav-style hip movement (if that makes sense). Hold the ball with both hands and just let the hip power launch it..
