Imagine throwing 80.46m and being gutted by it, in fact being sick to the back teeth by it, this is how it was this weekend at Derby when Mick failed to qualify for Athens, a mere 1.36m short but still short of the mark. This sport of ours is definately a roller coster of mental and physical pain with pleasure thrown in and all rolled up into one. There was Mick with head in hands and me trying to give a semblance of some words of support that meant absolutely nothing in the circumstances whilst sitting feet away from us was Mark Roberson and his coach Mike McNeil doing the same thing. Mick is at the end of his career and has been a great ambassador for Javvy throwing and it has been awesome working with him whilst at the other end of the spectrum I had a call on Saturday from a relative new comer to the sport who was ecstatic and rightly so as she had won the U17 International Schools comp with a pb of 41.62m so there you have both sides of the coin, pleasure and pain, but isnt that what makes it all the more exciting? downside is a few more grey hairs but what the hell I have loved every minute of it and cannot wait for the next round of pain or pleasure whatever comes first. Just like to add a welcome to newby Nicky and as you can see from the above you are in for one hellava time, enjoy it with the rest of us fortunate to be involved in throwing. Ps also had a week camping prior to this and I found a new event "Duckalin" this involves throwing bread as far as possibile javelin style of course trying to knacker out the ducks who chase after it at lightning speed, only trouble is that bread being "aerobically challenged" they dont have to run that far !!.and only one thing ended up being knackered and it wasnt the ducks. ;D Keep the joints lubricated and throw far folks!!.

"Ducklin" sounds an interest sport although it may head underground once the RSPB hear about it lol ;D As for Mick its a case that sometimes words will never make you feel better. The javelin can be pretty cruel sometimes no matetr what level your at. So send my hugs and thoughts instead. Mick was great to work with in Leeds both in Wilf's Friday sessions (plyometrics and medicine ball looked far to easy when he did them!) and during the talent ID sessions. On an end note if we enjoy both the pleasure and pain of the event does that make us all sadomachists? ?

It truely is a shame that a thrower so great should not be allowed to finish his career at the greatest sporting event that is The Olympic Games. If it wasn't for the video footage that i have seen of Mick's knee i ould urge him to push for the Commonwealth games. I certainly wouldn't advise him to give up throwing completely...Come and join my club and throw for us...do a bit of shot and discuss too... ;D I'm looking at the best of the rest and i do not see a worthy replacement for either Steve or Mick....Shame

Theres life in the old dog yet he is not laying down dormant for a tad bit longer. He is going to have a crack at the rest of them at the Golden League meeting on the 30th at Crystal Palace so it will be interesting to see how he performs against what will probably be most of the Olympic qualifiers anyhow. You cant keep a good man down dodgy knee and all, roll on.

Unfortunately Mick has now "had it" unlike the Americans and other countries that allow their athletes until 9th August and beyond to prove their worth but to be fair he should have thrown the distance. It sticks in the craw that after twenty eight years of being a class act there is no dispensation for allowing him the dignity of going out in style as per the footballers`testimonial matches allow for the ambassadors of the sport, which footballer lasts that long? but then there again we are dealing with Uka and they dont give a s**t for anyone but themselves. Be warned...
