In terms of training, how many times a week should I be looking at at this stage?

Rather than looking at how much should you be training look at how much time you can practically give to training!
When your trying to balance work, family and person stuff it gets quite hard. There is not only getting down the track for the club session / techy bits. There fitness stuff etc. Some people can find the time and energy to train in some way everyday (nearly) but doesnt mean it will work for you.
Exercise guideline say 3 times a week is a good target. Admittedly us throwers arent the most health of breed but its a starting point. Remember that doesnt mean 3 time a week throwing. It might be 1 good throws session, a trip to the gym and a run. Speak to your new club have a chat with your coach. Im sure they will help sort you a program out the fits in with your life.

Well guys, my first competition is on Wednesday. I don't know what to expect. Slightly nervous, but I know I've just started, so I won't be too serioius about it.
At the last training session, I did
7m and a bit with the 4kg shot Approx 20m with the 1kg discus
Don't know what that makes me, but hoping to do better on Wed by some miracle called positive thinking.
Wish me luck.
Nicky.

Just relax and dont be put off by other athletes throws, its your first comp and i know you will be nervous but it will soon become natural to compete and you will want more, once you have the bug, its hard to shrug.

SCater,
I'm afraid it's not in cheltenham, I am doing the very last of the Rosenheim league at the Bank of England sports ground in London.
Good luck at your event though, sounds like you'll do very well.
Nicky.

;D ;D ;D believe me your not alone there. i must have tried about 6 different tops under my club vest trying to decide which one made me look least like a old and past it pillock and most like steve backley. ;D i had'nt worn a vest for years, and i suddenly remembered why !....... sadly i failed on both the backley and pilliock fronts and in the end wore the one that my girlfiend picked, which has since become my lucky top. i'll be honest with you i was most nervous about the reaction to my first throw... i thought that since i was nearly ten years older than the rest of the whipper snappers i throw against they may well confuse me with someone half decent and just think i dress like ive never been to an athletics meet before just because im querky.... not because im clueless ! my worry was that as my first throw sailed out ten meters behind everyone else's i would die of embarrasment. although i had planned an elaborat escape plan that involved the grabbing of an "injured" shoulder it was not required. my first comp was at a small open meet at spenborough in the north of england.to my suprise evryone was really helpfull and nice and the whipper snappers i was worried about (as it happened one of them was one of beepee's throwers) were friendly and a good laugh and the whole thing went well, i just managed not to finish last which was a bonus. that was march this year and since then i have never looked back, my advice is to go for it. the field is a lot weaker than you think and within no time at all comps will be second nature to you i even won the wigan open in april due to a weak field and driving rain ! and came 5th in the yorkshire champs cos hardly anybody turned up thinking they couldnt win. 6 people actually turned up and despite being over 20m behind the winner, it was one of the best days sport ive ever enjoyed ! the most important thing is to enjoy it and only compete against your pb. nobody cares who came last only the top 3 are remember so thats what you should aim for good luck

JB, I know what you mean and you know us gals have to look our best, even when throwing a metal 4kg ball. ;D
I know I won't come last, so that's a comfort. I just hope I will make 8m today.

Hey clothing make the thrower!
I've done every combo going. I've been a young whipper snapper in a sexy crop top and mini shorts, right through to long sleeve tshirt under my vest. Now I just settle for a crop top under me vest. For some reason a tshirt under there makes me feel funny when i throw!?!
Personally though I dont think it is the clothing that makes the impression...its the shoes. What seasons javelin Spikes they have on, how used they are, any tape stuck on them etc. Now thats where you make the impression lol!
