hi, my name is jason and i need help... i live in s Florida and just for that fact alone i never had the opportunity to train with a javelin (its not legal) even though my coach said that i had the best work ethic he had ever seen and that i had real potential. I've had to deal with 2 ACL surgeries (one on each leg) and I'm literally typing with one arm right now while healing from a full labrum tear and partial rotator cuff tear (luckily not my throwing arm). I've even had to deal with health issues starting my freshman year in college. after this surgery i will have lost 2 years of my college career due to the health issues. now that everything is about to be fixed a woman at UM tells me u can't play sports in college anymore (never had a chance) even though i just got my AA. all i need is a trainer that is willing to teach me. i have more then enough drive to do anything and everything that they say. (I've had 3 surgeries and 7 months of jaw dropping physical therapy, with more to come) lol at this point I've tried everything. even if one of you could point me in the right direction, i would be more then grateful. you would be contributing to a 9 year dream. thank you for your time...
Jason
P.S: i would appreciate anything you can tell me. a trainer in South Florida or even anything as minuscule as a good book, training video, even a good weight for a javelin (i don't have much money but I'm willing to sacrifice to do this) i would appreciate it.

-2008 Javelin PB = ?

Jason,
You sound determined which is always good. Can i ask how you got so many injuries. I think before you commit yourself to such a crushing event as javelin throwing and considering your health issues you probably need a serious conditioning phase to begin with. This will help to protect your body from intense power training and also throwing.
The No.1 priority and i doubt anyone will disagree with me is to get a good reliable and safe technique because you can only throw well when you are healthy for a long enough period of time to consistently improve your throwing technique and buildup the distances and rythmn of your throw.
How about some more info? what is your experience of javelin and any videos of your throwing would also be a huge aid.

My Injurys Right Leg = 1997 ACL tear, Maniscus tear P.E. Basketball Fixed = 1999 (no problems since) Left Leg = 2003 ACL tear, Partial PCL, Maniscus tear, Senior year Football Fixed = 2006 (no problems since) Left Shoulder = 2001 Subluxated (fancy word for popped out then slid back into place) Junior Year football, 2005 baseball, 2008 MMA. Fixed = Augusts 12, 2008
My experience is that i don't have any. i've always stayed in shape after highschool. i rock climb, run, train MMA (which i'm going to stop when i do this), and work out on a daily basis. i have a lot of knowledge of shot put and discus. i made regionals 3 years for both of them. the last 2 years of me being in highschool i taught my coach how to throw and also the middle school coaches. my team called me coach instead of the real coach. the thing with me is that i enjoy throwing in general. my friends used to make fun of me because thats all i did. for track and field season i would practice a half hour before, 2 hours during, and 2 hours after practice everyday. so, to answer your question i have no real experience throwing javelin but i fell in love with it after watching one throw at the 2003 UF Meet and i've been hooked ever since.

P.S: what do you think i should buy to start training. (videos, books, Javelin with weight, and training equipment) thank you for your time...

I'm not sure that books/training aids are the answer for a beginner. What you really need is a coach who knows what to look for so that, as a beginner, you dont develop any bad habits, which of course are far harder to correct once they become ingrained!
As far as videos are concerned, you can't go far wrong with looking on YouTube at all the top guys.

Sigh... I would love to be an expensive coach... as I suspect a lot of the coaches on here would! Maybe an alternative is to find a coach in a different state and meet up every so often, and supplement it with sending videos for the coach to comment on?

that is something you will work out when you know how far you can throw and how solid your technique is. javelins vary in design depending on how far you throw.. they usually range from 40m to 100m in range (depending on how stiff they are)

well that a vicious cycle for me. i don't know how far i can throw because i've never thrown and my technique is weak because i have none. i also live in florida which don't have a highschool that will let me try their equipment. i really am a full fledge beginner in javelin. lol you ask me about shot put and discus and i can tell you everything that you would ever need to know, but javelin i'm a rookie on all standards. really the only coach around here that might help an adult is really expensive. someone did tell me that this javelin is good for a beginner. www.everythingtrackandfield.com/detail.aspx_Q_ID_E_3386_A_CategoryID_E_422let me know what you think. also what do you think about the ones that sports authority sell on their website. i'm an employee their so i get a really good discount. www.sportsauthority.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=javelin&origkw=javelin&sr=1Jason

crikey i wouldn't use the gill ones.. i would go for the nemeth ones they are quality javelins even at low ratings. go for a 60m or 70m one but seriously try some out before you buy one! also try this forum as it's based in the USA disc.yourwebapps.com/Indices/109718.html

lol see, now i'm glad i asked. i'm going to try to use FIU"S crap but i've tried to get this guy to help me before and he is a hard man to get a hold of. the reason why i asked about the gill is because they have a payment plan and i get a 25% discount. so i could buy the more expensive one and pay less over time. i heard you say cricky but lol is gill really that bad... also you wouldn't suggest getting a 50m at all. you think i should just go straight to a 60m-70. thank you for you time
