Well I'm kinda getting annoyed with pulling my intercostal muscles And I want to try and stop it happening... But I have another pull now... With one in my back And it makes it hard to breath so I want to know if anyone knows anything that can be done to calm it down and stop it all together? Thanks x

Ouch, I've done that before - when I was recovering from a bad cough and caught myself in a funny position at the wrong time! I had to brace my torso with my hands every time I sneezed or coughed and forget about laughing. Took 2 weeks before I could train comfortably again. What were you doing at the time? Do you currently have a respiratory condition or bug that has placed your intercostals under stress? You say this has happened before - were you unconsciously tensed at the time knowing it could happen again? I know that some runners have worked on their breathing efficiency with a "turbo breather" contraption (can't remember the proper name) that exercises the muscles around the lungs or something. That might help... but I think if this is a recurring problem, a visit to the doc is the way to go. Hope you get better soon.

Mmmm. Getting ice on an intercostal is not any easy job!!! Know it sounds easier than it is, but relaxing when you throw, trusting in your technique putting you in the correct position and just allowing your arm speed to do the job ... will do the the job! In the past, when I was young, I used to try too hard and everything tensed up from my jaw downwards!!! Every throw had to 'be out the stadium'! I was so embarrassed when the local rag printed a photo of me like that!!! ;D Take some deep breaths and relax your shoulders before you throw and keep your body warm when training/competing etc especially around your torso. Warm muscles move far better and don't catch on your ribs!

Exalted Erm yeah that's my big big problem at the moment I'm trying to smack the poop out of every throw meaning my technique goes to pot My actual technique in training doesn't hurt it... It's when I throw in competition I have no technique Something that does need sorting But it will come Thankies

There is a really nice prehab exercise you can do for them and also general torso.
Take a weight disc holding it out infront of you (chest height) at arms length and assume a neutral hip/back position with legs slightly bent and shoulder width apart. Now draw circles with the plate around your body as widely as possible all the time keeping the movement slow and controlled. Be sure to lean out as far as you can in all directions as you circle but maintaining the neutral hip/lower back position all the time. Use a small disc first time 3x10 1.25kg go clockwise and then repeat anticlockwise.
As your core gets stronger and more stable you can increase the weight. I use 25kg but i doubt you need anything like that much to feel the benefit, maybe an end target of 10kg or so is a good goal.
