I would have to go for Slinger, he has been close enough to touch it, but had injury set backs....but is now within grasp of it again!

The focus of the voting here is more on forum members however we can also add an interview with someone like Mark roberson to our "meet the pro's" section. If anyone has details we can contact him on or can ask him personally if he would be willing to help then please PM them to admin. Would be great to hear from someone who's done the serious business throwing and coaching.

Here is Nigels Interview from my site.......just in case some have not seen it.
Fresh from Coaching GB Record holder Matti Mortimer at Throwsfest on 1st July 2007, Nigel Bevan gave an Interview To RJT Online about some of his past experiences in the Javelin Event.
What were your first memories of javelin throwing?
I saw Tom Petranoff throw 99m which inspired me. My dad threw the javelin and pole vaulted for Wales as well as being a British and World Champion trampolinist. He bought some javs back for me and my brother to throw around our garden when we were about 11 and I got into doing that!
So what were you like then?
I was quite small and aggressive when I was young but could throw pretty good. I threw 35m in year 7 in a PE lesson but only threw 29m in a comp and 33m in year 8. By year 9 I threw 36.16m downhill measured by Mike McNeil who taught at a local school. It wasn't until year 10 that I needed to throw 38m with the 700g jav that my teacher took me out to let me have a go rather than wasting my time going to the south suffolks whose entry standard was 38m and as I had grown quite a bit I chucked it about 38m, so that was it - South Suffolks here I come!
And....
I threw 45m and eventually joined Ipswich Harriers and threw 49.80m at Cambridge when this big lad threw 52m to beat me -Mark Roberson! From then on he was in my sights as Gary Jenson was a hero throwing 72m! - Mark was about 58m at best.
The next year was my first full year and all I wanted to do was throw 50 and did it at my first go - 52.28m and qualified for English schools and just kept improving throwing 58.08m before the schools but threw 57m at the schools to come 2nd to a guy called Justin Rubio who threw 59.98m - my only defeat of the season. I won the schools international the next week with a pb of 61.78m and the European Catholic Games later with 63.36m which made me top youth.
From then on I carried on playing my rugby and football until 18 and then went to Carnegie to hook up with Wilf Paish and Tessa Sanderson. Mick Hill was there at the time which was great for me. Steve Backley visited a few times as we were good mates then and did a few sessions with Wilf although Fatima was his official coach at the time.
What were you like at other sports?
I had England U15 football trials as a goalkeeper and played from Ipswich town youth team until I was 17 and I also had England U16 and U18 rugby trials as I went to a big rugby school. My football and athletics were outside school interests but I did play with and againsnt some famous players including Ruud Hullit and Paul Gascoyne who both visited Ipswich on trial and were sent packing. Otherwise I was pretty good at cricket and most sports. I ran 10.9 for the 100m and 55.6 400H, 7.05LJ, 14m triple, 1.95HJ so was not a bad athlete as a junior but I ended up doing all of these events on the same day for my club!
What were your performances like after Carnegie?
I went to Brunel after that year and ended up throwing 73.73m as a junior after my year with Wilf improving from 64.80m which was my first year training and I came 4th at the European Juniors which started a spate of 4th places - 4th at 2 world students (1989/91 79.56/77.90) 4th at two Commonwealths (1990/1994 - 79.70m/80.42m) and in all cases as little as 2cms behind medals - of which Steve won all of the above events! I usually throw pB's at these meets and when I went to the 1992 Olympics I threw well over the 81m qualifying line for a PB on my last throw only for the guy to call a foot foul which it wasn't and even a mate of mine who was on the line said the same.
I got stuck aound the 80m mark for a few years and had a spate of injuiries and went to live in the US which didn't really work out for me so ended up pottering about in various jobs when I should have really been at my peak! I really missed out on this lottery generation and didn't really get much in the way of help throughout my career which is why I try and ensure that people I coach get looked after.
So who have you coached then?
As a teacher, I coached quite a few of my school kids to English schools representation and a big Fella called James Bull was the first kids to win English school shot put U15 with abot 14.70ish and won it a few years after that but then came up against Carl Myerscough! Other kids won of medalled in 800m, long jump, javelin, sprints and we had a few good cross country kids. I went to the US and coached on a DIII programme while doing my masters degrees and our throwers (who weren't really throwers) did really well and by the 2nd year they won all the conference titles and I'd enter 5 per event and we'd usually place 1-5. I had 8 guys over 53m in the jav and two around 60m which is good for DIII and had a couple of 45m discus lads. I had one shot putter called Kevin Carpenter who is the spitting image of Scott Rider who coached a few years later and I taught him how to spin and he went from 40ft when he started indoors to the next year throw 58 ft as a 19 year old and nearly 50m in the discus - and he was an artist - just like Scott - really quite spooky. My 2nd year there I also coached indoor sprints and had some good results with two lads running 47.4 from 49/50 seconds for the 400m and two good hurdlers, one of which improved from 16.6 to 14.3 and came 3rd in the D III nationals. I really enjoyed that and wanted to stay but there weren't any jobs at the time so I came back to the UK and lectured at the Uni of Wolverhampton briefly before returing to teaching in London.
When I moved to Birmingham I coached Tyson Johnson who was throwing about 70m+ as a first year U20 but hurt his adductor and then left Birchfield after that! Beckie Bartlette threw 51.17m and went to the world juniors, Jo Blair threw 51.13m and went to the Junior Commonwealths and the Europeans the next year and helped out with Jo chapman who threw 49m as a junior as well - and in the first two cases - they improved a heck of a lot. Mike Tarran was another lad who threw 68m but his job really dented his chances of really progressing. I had a really good group of others as well but it all went a bit pear shapeded when I left for Suffolk with Becks and Tyson being left ot their own devices and not being able to throw on Club Nights, they lost interest, which was such a shame.
I coach a few good kids here at Ipswich such as Matti and a couple of others when they show up who have got English school qualifiers and my school had won 6 or 7 national ISA titles since I have been here over a range of events, but I'm off to Cardiff via Brum this summer. I like coaching lots of events TBH but I take what ever is put before me!
What next?
Who knows, hopefully this new job will go well and it can give me the oppotunity to show people what I can do. I have a pretty good track history of getting people fit and strong and have a pretty good eye for technique and I hope this doesn't desert me now I have a great opportunity! It also means I can train as well and get fit in the process so you may see me slinging away next year now! I just want to enjoy life and provide a great enviroment for my daughter to thrive in really, and be respected for being someone who can deliver and assist when and where ever possible.
Nigel, Thank You for this great Insight!
Chris

Excellent stuff.
Nigel's last sentence (in the last paragraph), should be an inspiration for all coaches, educators and role models.
"I just want to enjoy life and provide a great enviroment for my daughter to thrive in really, and be respected for being someone who can deliver and assist when and where ever possible."
Well done to Nije and LBA40, our roaming reporter/photographer.
Chris, send through your measurements, we need to get you a Martin Bell suit!!!
Jezza ;D ;D
