hi sadie, welcome to the javclub, there's loads of great people on here who can help you but i'll start the ball rolling and answer you about how to get your hip into the throw more......
i'll try to keep it simple as not to confuse you [and me!] okay?
right well firstly it's important to understand why we need to get the use of other body parts like the hip into the throw as opposed to just the arm throwing the javelin.........to put it simply an early use of the right hip prior to left foot contacting and the arm striking is the first process to what's called "the stretch reflex action" - this is where a stretch is creating going from the right leg through the hip and abdomen and up through the chest and shoulder - this is the holy grail of the javelin thrower and all try to achieve this, without it it's just an arm throw and so much more power can be achieved by the stretch reflex, of course other factors affect the stretch reflex action like a solid left leg block, upper body position and run up speed etc so although the right hip is very important it's certainly not the be all and end all to javelin.
right ways to improve it..........ooohhh let me think??...........................fixed feet javelin/ball throws - these are where you kind of rock from your right foot onto your left foot with the javelin withdrawn and on each "rock forward" it's the right hip that causes the movement and initiates the rocking - do 3 or 4 priming movements then on the 4th or 5th priming movement throw. You can do swan back exercises with medi balls - again driving the right hip before the left comes down - remember to block hard with the left leg though. There's a thing called a javee which is like a javelin sawed off just either side of the grip so are left with a javelin grip to hold and at one end there's a length of bungee cord attached to the end and this can then be tied to something fixed i.e a post and you can work your legs and hips whilst keeping the cord at tension with your arm held well back. Have a watch too at full speed and in slow mo. of some of the best guys and girls in the world and try to imagine what they are thinking when they do the skill as everyone has different thought process' on how to achieve things - even if they are the same things.
.......all these exercises are fine as they are drills to help establish your technique but they aren't throws or rather "proper" throws and to best work your right hip well during a proper throw off a run up in my opinion is to get into a position with your body that actually allows you to do so, many people don't get into a position that allows them to work their hip effectively and so wonder why they can't.
have a read in the technique section on here and i did a post a while back on the right hip and what the position is that actually allows you to do the skill.........
..........so to recap -
1. do the drills, so they become second nature.
2. get into the right positions to actually allow you to work the hip.
3. watch what the very best do.
hope that's helped a bit - if it hasn't i'm sure someone else can put it into english and not gobbledygook like i have!!!!!
