No you're not allowed to tape fingers together. Extract from UKA Rules: (6) No device of any kind (e.g. the taping of the fingers) which in any way assists a competitor when making a throw shall be allowed, except in throwing the Hammer where the taping of individual fingers is permitted. NOTE: The use of tape to cover injuries to the hand will be allowed only if the Referee is satisfied on medical or other evidence that the tape is necessary. The use of tape on the wrist will be allowed.Note also for those of you who use tacky or chalk you must only put the substance on yor hands and not directly onto the spear (see rule 138-7 below) (7) In order to obtain a better grip, competitors are permitted to use an adhesive substance on their hands only except in the Hammer. (See Rule 133(7))They may be boring and at times not easy to read but it's worth any athlete reading the specific rules of their event. You may do something perfectly innocently only to find it's not in line with the rules and you could get dq'd! The rules of competition are available on the UKA website (link below). Remember ignorance of the rules is not an excuse! www.ukathletics.net/vsite/vcontent/page/custom/0,8510,4854-177309-194527-39197-260837-custom-item,00.html

As I mentioned in the other thread. I had my thumb taped / supported for the year after it was wired together. The referess were generally OK with me throwing with the strapping, although it's a palava to go through this at every competition.

so for those who use spray mount or similar type of glue spray........it ain't allowed, but whose going to say you can't? reckon officials won't give a "wahey, were the monkey's"
personally i'm a big aficionado of chalk aka magnesium carbonate - lil' tip don't buy it from expensive "athletics equipment manufacturers" for like 3 quid a block - go to a rock climbing type shop - quid a block, job's a good 'un!

You can get quite good fights when you go abroad and someone uses someone else's jav and then covers their "hand" in sticky stuff!

Anyone remember the official at the Intercounties in Bedford last year who insisted on having all the javelins laid out in competitor order and wouldn't release them till you were about to throw!! And god forbid anyone who wanted to borrow someone elses spear even with their permission!

I would think that is because of his broken finger. He probably won't have them taped next season, as the break will be well healed by then.

indeed caroline is corret. what is missing up there is the bit about having dispensation when you have a medical certificate to say you need the strapping.
In bonne's case the strapping is actually a hinderance as he can't grip the spear properly. this became apparent at the intercounties in august when after the first 3 rounds he was so far ahead that the official demanded he removed the strapping because he was getting an unfair advantage.. so after some arguing he eventually removed it and went on to throw a further 4m better than he already had done....

I think the key thing here is that the rules state you may not tape your fingers to give yourself any advantage. I'm not sure how restricting the movement of your fingers can be seen as an advantage, I would consider it to be more of a hinderance and as Bonne says, he would rather throw with an uninjured hand than with a broken finger and taping.

The key thing really is to fully understand the rules. I'd like to think no-one was accusing Bonne of cheating. Thankfully he and Sam have a good understanding of the rules and did exactly the right thing in getting a medical certificate to show the necessity of the strapping. As has been said taping is no help at all and more of a hinderence, I had to throw with a taped finger once this year after cutting it on a can. I even had to take off the taping to show the ref the wound!
