Apparently the guess coach for the throwing events was none other than Fatmia Whitebread. Anyone any thoughts on that?

What is her claim to fame coaching wise??
Didn't really get much out of the competitors - would have expected more out of the two younger guys.

well appart from being world record holder (at one point) and coaching shelley holroyd for a while and coaching katy amos (52m) and me(once apon a time) i don't think that she has really done much on the coaching side of things. she helped dave ottley back in the 80's to throw over 80m....

OK - thanks for the background.
What did you think - would you have expected more or do you think she achieved as much as could be reasonably expected in such a short time??

Its hard to make any decision on the improvement of the athletes at the Games. We dont know their natural ability or the amount of time they spent on the event. Also was fatmia chosen because of her coaching ability or because it looked good on TV.
I guess it does make fo an interesting question regarding ex-athletes becoming coaches. Does being a good athlete transfer into being a good coach? At presnt UKA do a fast-tracking system for ex-athletes into coaching. Do you think its a good idea?

I think having more coaches on the ground must be a good thing.
I think coaching is one of those things that some people have a natural flair for & others need to develop.
I do not think that ex-athletes necessarily make good coaches but it must give them a good foundation.

I think The Games only had 2 real good things about it. 1. promoted the sport of athletics via celebs 2. showed that you dont have to be great to take part as you can see from some of the results. it was just another money making scheme and closed off venues for the real athletes, preventing them from training/improving. like someone said the money speaks louder than athletes

Sam aint kidding.... i would keep an eye out for bone buwembo he's young and new to the game, a little rough around the edges but he's got an arm like greased lightning... its seriously quick, he was almost standing still after a shady run up when he threw his pb at the weekend, it was all arm, bloody fast arm !

Getting back to the javelin games... wow was i pleased pat sharp didnt beat me ! ;D.... my initial hostility has wained a little cos just a week after it aired a new lad turned up at our training to gove jav a go for the first time, and he looks like a great prospect. maybe the games wasnt all that bad even if it did stop our elite atheletes training in an OLYMPIC YEAR !

It was good if it encouraged some people into the sport, or sport in general looking at the bigger problems with health etc. Its a bit sad though that these could werent reached by our athletics stars rather than "celebs" having a bash. Mind you not everyone come into the sport for the traditional reasons. I remember a certain young jav thrower who joined a club cause the assistant jav coach / thrower was a bit scrummy. Nothing much is heard of the male thrower now but the female is still going strong
