Yeah i know....and the senior mens went up from last year or the year before, not sure if the womans had....whats makes you laugh is that 66m would have got you 4th or 5th place.

to be honest you wouldn't get much competittion if the womens was a much higher standard....there were only five throwers in the comp last year!

The problem gets worse at regional level competition. I remember going to the Northern U20's one year and there was only 4 of us and I was under the qualifying!
Its that difficult decision to make. Should you try and maintain standards or lower them to actually encourage athletes to compete and ensure a proper competition?
Personally i think the standards need reviewing. I know some people will argue that we just have to get people good enough but with declining number of throwers and coaches to work with them youve got to do something to encourage people to keep participating.
Making the northerns may just prevent the drop out of some people on the borderline. Especially in the U20 catagory not to mention the fact that increases the commercial viability of the event.

Standards should be set according to the results of the pevious year.
For example take the Senior AAA 1st 76 then 68, 67, 65, 63, 63, 61, 61 ,58.
Take this years entry standard of 66....that would have got you 4th last year, so should'nt the entry be about 62/63...it may open championships to alot more athletes but then the selectors simply select throwers who have been more consistent....then in the surroundings of a championship p.b's are more likely to happen.

I totally agree Ant. Prime example is the Northern Championships Senior Womens Javelin. Only 3 entries and 3rd place was 35m. The qualifying is 37m.
The AAA Senior Womens Jav is the same only 7 entries with an entry standard of 46m. Bronze was won with 44m.
What sense does that make especially with not that many quality throwers coming through.

Ant, congrats on your 65. I am sure you will get in the AAA with your 65 this year. Bet this year you will have to throw 75 just to make the top 5.
