Does anyone els suffer from this. If you haven't heard the term it means when you crack a vertebrae out of place. It results in restricted movement in the local area and mucle spasm+ its very annoying and even with treatment takes 1-2 weeks to fully recover. I don't know why but it happens to me all the time, in the neck, between the shoulder blades and very occasionally in the lower back also which is very bad and takes much longer to recover. It happens doing almost all aspects of training, including weights, jumps and throwing. I used to be constantly seeing an osteopath or chiropractor but after a while i learned how to crack it back into place by myself. Even if i manage to crack it back straight away though the muscle spasm still lingers for a few days. I'm totally sick of this as its a constant interuption to my training- does anyone els have the same trouble or even better does anyone have a solution.

with my back wez, it often gets tight in the lower part and feels "locked" when this happens i then have to "crack" it as you say........i do this by lying on the floor and arching my back, sometimes "bouncing it" [imagine what colin jackson did at the start of his race as he got into the blocks] sometimes it'll "crack" with constant pressure as i arch, the key for me is to try and relax and let the muscles go.........it's often as i'm sitting for a while or tbh even when i'm walking at work, if it's when sitting the "crack" is real hollow deep clunk.
when my back goes bad however it doesn't matter how much clunking i do, it's the muscles which are sore and in spasm, they go solid and it pulls my back out of line and i'm bent over sideways for 3 - 5 days, even when the muscles have relaxed and i'm back in line they are still sore for up to another 3 - 5 days.
i don't know what causes the spasms, all i know is what things i can do and what i can't do, anything with constant twisting and bending is a "no - no" something like cleaning my car is one thing, but if my back is feeling fine then it's no problem, but if it's a bit sore then i forget it.........it's just something i've learned and the feelings i have from my back for being like this for 4 and a half years.
my thinking is there's something there which is touching nerves and triggers this spasm, my disc could still be prolapsed, maybe there's a build up of scar tissue on the disc form where it tore? i don't know? maybe it's because there's very little stability in that area? [wez, btw i did a load of core work this morning! got to keep it up!]
something which i also thought is that the whole area is always in a state of tension and never relaxed, so i've been having regular massage once or twice a week to try and remedy this and i thinks it's helping as it's freeing off my hips and ass abit more, maybe it's what you need around your neck and shoulder blades, it surely wouldn't harm?
i still have what i call "bad days" with my back but *touch wood* [everyone do the same!] it hasn't gone into spasm mode for ages, so it is deffo better than it used to be.
what do you think it is that triggers yours wez? does it ache when you sit, do you sit at work? if so then maybe only sit for 15 or 20 minutes at a time then have a 5 minute walk around, i've learned over time to do things at my own pace and not rush, for example cleaning the house, i'll wash the pots, then sit down for a while, then i'll dust or whatever, have another break then hoover etc now if kara was doing that she'd do it all in one go, no matter how long it took, she painted the hall once and she was doing it still wehn i got up to go to work at 3.30am.........now you see, me i'd do bits at a time, i think it's figuring out what it is that sets it off and eliminating it.

Hi Both For over 2 years my Wife has similar problems with her back, it was a nightmare for her. Although not so much Sublaxations, she did have the muscle spasms, intense pain and could not walk. There did not seem to be any reasoning and pinning it down was almost impossible. A lot of time on crutches too, and she has such a high pain threshold, I knew how bad it was for her! Her back used to lock, or pain in lower back and or legs. It was only when she had an MRI scan that there seemed to be a course of action. The main pain was in the lower back, and they said from the results of the scan they could not guarantee the pain going. They said it would help her sciatica, but not the back! Anyway, long story cut short, they removed 1 disc from her back, and "filed" another one down. The very next day, pain had gone, and has never returned, not in her back or legs! She tried everything before that, all types of back specialists, even acupuncture and heat therapy.... If you have not tried the Docs and asked him for an op, get it done now! We were advised not to have an operation, but she did not take no for an answer, and now she is back to normal, like you could be Phil!?

possibly, you see my pain isn't there all the time, i get good days and bad days, but i try and take one day at a time and do everything i can to make that day a good day, i know that i must do more core work to try and stabilise and strengthen the area and i feel i have to give this a damn good go before thinking about going to the doctors [again btw, it's a long story] and thinking about surgery, yes i know things can be done and my friend at work has had an op on something similar to mine and it's worked too, but her friend has and it didn't.
it's my daily struggle, i'm quite a competitive soul and i see it as my challenge. i'm also a very positive person and see it if i didn't hurt my back i'd still be throwing, but if i was still throwing i wouldn't be able to coach my nephew and he's far better than i was..........i almost see it as if it was meant to be [if you believe in that kind of thing!] for some reason the worse i get at javelin throwing the better my back becomes.........SO maybe it was meant to be! - when i can't throw for toffee, my back will be 100% healed!!! hehehehe........ ;D

Competitive, my better half is too competitive for her own good!
When she was on crutches, she once played a Darts match, and someone did the running for her (as in cricket!). She still beat the bloke!
I do hope you get it sorted, and I also believe in Fate!
But, and far be it for me to say, dont let it turn into Pride why you wont get it done! Be in control of your OWN destiny!
My back is now sorted, and it was only bad for 6 weeks so I cant imagine what it is like permenently!

The lower back is another thing for me all together- like Phil's its an ongoing issue, but having had alot of treatment for it and done an enormous ammount of core stability work (i still do as part of my training) i have the problem at bay. I don't get any of this back trouble however if i don't train so for me that is the major issue. Its just frustrating that after so putting so much effort into getting my lower back sorted now its my upper back and neck that are playing up. This time round it was a dodgy power clean and back jerk that caused the trouble. I was doing 3x6 reps 90kg and i guess i just lost concentration as the fatigue set in. I've got a feeling that all of my vertebrae are a little lose and liable to pop out of place if i'm off balance while under strain. This time around my neck is worst and the upper back just sore with a bit of a warning sign in the lower back. I know it will happen another 5-6 times this winter, it makes me mad because i can't perform fully and any increases get held up each time. I've seen back specialists and there is not any surgical solution, i've been given 2 types of advice. 1 stop training 2 do alot of core work and don't push my luck with the rest. I generally follow no.2 but just can't help pushing my luck I believe Phil can get over his back trouble by just going insane with the core work -like i did, his symptoms and state are very similar to what mine were like hes just 2 years behind me. There is a long thread about it from earlier. PS Phil asked what triggers mine- well nothing anymore except training and even then very rarely in the lower back, but it used to be exactly as you have described.

It just goes to show that anything can trigger it......in Gina`s case, it was a small kids toy on the stairs, and it was just trying to catch her balance. Nothing like falling down the stairs or anything. I have a pain at the bottom of my neck, and is made worse by my job (fixing computers) and it never ever goes away. Most of the time its fine, at its worse (anything over an hour or 2 sat at a pc) can be like someone stabbing me! I have sports massages regular, and have been to the various specialists, but it is something I have to put up with....... get a different job = No neck pain Dont train hard = No back pain Dont throw Javelins = No back pain Not going to happen is it! We all know our own body more than anyone, sometimes we have just got to ease up, to be better in the long run?
