one thing you can do is soak your hand in iced water, at least that should bring the swelling down.
If the swelling does not go after a week or so, see a doc as it may be broken or dislocated!

Hey bonne..
I have had a thought.. i think that you might have torn a ligament int he finger...or at least strained it!!
Lee dorran tore the ligament in his finger last year and his finger swoll up as much as yours has! he had to tape it to his ring finger and rest it for a few weeks!
Will speak to you about this in the morning!!

years ago when i threw a lot - basically whenever i was bored, my middle finger swelled up at the middle knuckle and the knuckle is still visibly bigger at the knuckle and still won't bend fully - don't know what happened or why it happened, perhaps over use??? my right elbow was the same at the time i threw alot i couldn't straighten my right arm properly, as time went on and i stopped throwing in the fields behind my house it got better and so did the finger..........bit odd really, anyway back to the post!!! bonne if your finger is still bad i think a trip to the doctors or even hospital is needed

Hi I have had this injury before. My finger was very painful, swollen and I couldn't straighten it. I had torn the ligaments in my PIP joint on my ring finger, twisted the joint and dislocated it too (left hand). I went to the hospital who then referred me to an occupational therapist and a hand physio. Yes there is such a thing! The physio worked and then advised me that if I had left the injury any longer I would never have full use of my finger again. The OT gave me a contraption to put on my finger that would straighten it and help the ligaments heal properly. It looked weird but it worked. She also made a thermoplastic splint for my hand at night. This was to keep my finger straight. Apparently I had torn the ligaments that assist in bending and straightening the finger. That was September 2004 and I have about 90% use of my finger back. I still can't straighten it or bend it fully. This was because of the ligaments being torn. Like anything you tear, you always have scar tissue. Go to the hospital and have an x-ray. They can tell if you've snapped the ligaments because they'll see a chip in your bone. That's how they found mine. Also I found this website that gives a lot of info on fingers. It may help. www.sportsinjurybulletin.com/archive/1073-finger-injuries.htmShelley

i found out what was wrong with my finger. i went for an x-ray. Apparently i've chipped a bone in the joint of the finger.
every time i threw the chipped bone was agrravating the siskin. this made it sweel up triple the normal size .......
i'm going to be able to throw for at least 1 month or so ... that will depend on the out come from the fracture clinic

Bonne,
Like Slinger I'm sure I speak for all when I wish you the very best of luck in getting this sorted.
UK Athletics, English Institute of Sport, British Olympic Association, ABAC, Sport England, England Athletics, AAA's, (to name but some of the governing bodies in our sport) all talk a good game about the "development" of our sport and the need for protecting and nurturing our talent. Maybe they are unaware of your situation, and hence can't be expected to help or advise in any way.
It's up to you but let's give it a go and ask some of these people what they are prepared to do?
Let's put them to the test and get you the help you require to get this injury fixed.
All the best mate.
Jeremy

I had problems with my first finger, and sometimes my third, but I never got it sorted, I just kept using it, its a funny shape now, but it works fine, working through the pain sometimes helps. I kept pulling at it and stuff - maybe i sorted it accidently!!
