Hi everyone! I was just wondering if anyone knows if a javelin thrower that has had a SLAP lesion, had the op to fix it and came back to throw descent distances? I have just been diagnosed with it and just wanted to see if there was any hope for me to come back and throw?

yes there is hope, i have slap lesion in both shoulders,i had an op on my right shoulder 17 months ago,i am just starting to throw again this year .i had a slap lesion bi-cep tear type 2 and a decompression and something else.i didn't work for six months, but yours might not be so bad,i have worked really hard at it but it is coming back slowly.my advice to you is have it done and do loads of the core training before the opp.

17 months!! I knew it would take some time but......oh well chin up I guess. What do you mean by core training? I can really do much with my shoulder up above my shoulder.

it may not be so long for you so keep your chin up ,what i mean by core, is strengthening exercises with stability ball and thera band, rotor cuff exercises that the phisio may have told you to do.by the way did your injury happen over a period of time,or did it just happen with one throw?

Oh! Yeah, I'm doing that stuff. It was over a period of about 2 years if I'm honest - I had a little break I thought it would help and unfortunately it didn't really help at all - is that bad?

The thing with just "resting" and not getting it treated is that some injuries such as tears can scar and thicken. In the shoulder that can lead to problems when you go back to throwing as the bicep tendon is thicker than it used to be and rubs against other stuff, inflames and gets sore! I've got my shoulder to a point where I can throw without pain and without noticing it, but as soon as I roll over onto my right side, it wakes me up! Oh well!

yes i agree, but sounds just like slap lesion apparently it is quite rare.i had problems with mine for 4 to 5 years before i had my opp so don't worry to much, you may find its just a small tear or some think. do you have a catching sensation when rotating your shoulder? and does it snap, crack, and pop?i did all the physio work but it didn't seem to do any think for me neither.

Not so much a catching sensation - just really hurts when I do almost everything. There is some crunching sounds sometimes but not all. And my arm is very weak compared to what it used to be - well, I think its still strong but the pain forces me to stop - if you get what I'm saying? its weird cos I find my body protecting itself and I find I 'm doing things differently, like pouring a drink etc. I just wanna get it sorted now!!!!!
Are you happy with your arm now? Is it nice to have it pain free? Is it pain free now?

yes my arm is prity much pain free, and it does feel more stable and settled. Before just sitting down or standing up my shoulder would feel inflamed and irritated, now I have more or less got full mobility. I am now back training in the gym, with all my strength back and more.
Hope all goes well with your shoulder,If you need any more information or have any questions please drop us a line.
