Hi Jav-Lovers I wonder if any ofyou ever experiences shoulder impingement? I have someone who has just been diagnosed with this injury and has recently had a cortisone injection to the affected area near his rotator cuff. It seems this is a common injury in throwers (whether it is baseball, javelin etc) however would be interested to know how others have manage to work with this problem. In addition, what strategies, treatment and action have you taken to maintain your form. Is it a carer threatening injury and can one still throw (witholding the pain abit) during a major competition in a few weeks? Im told one story of an athlete took steps to have a pain killing injection before a major competition but it canhave some pros and cons. Your thoughts? I look forward to your reply Regards OzThrow

i had this injury mid season this year. luckily it was only a slight impingment that only needed a few weeks rest from full throws and about 5/6 physio sessions. it has been a problem for me as i tend to bring the arm through to low. i got some excellent dumbell excersizes to help rehab and prevent future injuries that may help... they have certainly helped me.
1 - laying flat on your back put your arm out at 90 degrees to your body then bend the arm at the elbow so your palm is facing up (like your about to swear an oath) now using a light weighted dumbell bring the hand up (keeping the elbow on the floor) to verticle and back down again, repeat 3x8
2 - light dumbell again, this time flat on back armtucked into side then bend at elbow so your forearm is at right angles to your body (imagine top of arm strapped to chest) lift hand from floor to verticle and back donw again, repeat 3x8
3 - single arm pull overs with light dumbell from ;aying flat on floor (slow controlled movement all the way over and down to floor again, then back, repeat 3x8
all of thos excersizes must be down slowly and controlled at a managable weight. as well as doing these i found that doing bicep curls with your hands in different positions also helped (i was given these to do for a nerve prob in the arm, but im sure they helped the all over strenght and most importantly stability of the arm and shoulder.) using a medium heavy weight do bicep curls x10 first in the traditionla way then with the hand facing down, then another set with the hand facing to the side (dumbell on its side)
hope this helps (remember tho mine was only a small form of what sounds like a far mopre serious injury for your friend)
