AS a coach i realise that it is important to alter my coaching aproach slightly for the females in my group.
I ask to be told when the time of the month is upon them because i know that some of them will have lapses in their performance and i don't want to be moaning at them about poor performance.
Certain techniques do not work with the girls like they do for the boys. i cannot shout like a drill seargent at the girls as much as i do the boys.
I have to adapt the amount of reps and the level of effort that i expect from the boys. don't get me wrong i don't let the girls wimp out i just make sure they are working to the best of their abilities and acept when i can see they are well and truely cooked.
Question is to the other coaches out there.. how do you aproach the females under your wing?

Are there not boys too Sam, that cannot be shouted at like a Drill Sargeant? Not all women are affected by hormonal balances Sam, and although I look after Sadie, we need some women views on this I suppose? Boys too can have times when they are feeling down, upset, irritable, tired and all things rightly or wrongly associated with PMT. I know I do! Also, it is sometimes impossible to get results for ALL in the comp unless you hear or see what they get. The other night Sadie had a pb and even she did not know what it was! It is easier in larger comps as they use the boards so we can write it down. I know this is not in the right thread, but you made a sticky of the other one so I could not reply!

I don't really mind being shouted instrucitons ect I prefer that and I also prefer that a coach moans and groans if I have a bad performance ect! I would rather a coach be like that with me! obviously if I am annoyed or upset about something they will take that into account but I prefer a coach to be more strict with me. If I do a competition and I have not performed well then I prefer to be told that I havent done well. I know that when the sprinting group at Wrexham use to have about 40-50 people alot of the girls prefered to sprint together then mix with the boys, where as I prefered to sprint with the boys ect or with the faster girls. Some girls prefer to be coached differently but for me I like my coaches to be strict but fair with me!

This can be a minefield and by suggesting that you should treat girls differently could be misconstrued as sexist in itself even if no harm was intended. It depends upon your coaching style. I am sure if you were being assessed for L3/L4 you would come across as a reasonable caring man and would refrain from swearing, shouting or using any terms of abuse that you may use and describe as general banter in a session.
If you adopt counselling skills, you mirror the situation and the person so if you hapen to be coaching a young boy with a potty mouth - you should mirror this to be an effective communicator otherwise perceived barriers are drawn.
I tend to treat the girls the same as the boys TBH and take the person for what they are and use basic man management skills for setting the tone - not that I should be the template. I seem to recall having most of a class of girls try and make my life hell when they convinced themsleves that I was sexist because they thought I had mad a handbag reference to one of them. A woman scorned eh! I was also taken to task and blamed because women did not do the same events as men in athletics (at the time) even though I put it to the class that this was a definate case or sexist descrimination in the sport. Some battles you just cannot win - suck it up and move on! (and give them all crap grades!)

I am surprised that you could be misunderstood -You must be one of the most PC correct coaches I know
Very understanding -never raise your voice-How could you be called sexist-The mind boggles

John,. trust me when I tell you that it is a mine field!!!!! I see teachers inapropriately touching children, having inappropriate relationships, lewd text messaging, taking sixth former and younger chidlren out for lunch meeting up withthem for drinks - all of this illegal. Then I get - the big horrible man punished me by making me do cross country!!! In that case - she did cross country with the rest of the class as it was their first of 3 cross country runs over the 34 week year! Now I think that was pretty reasonable of me. This girl's form teacher looked pretty stupid when she entered the head office thinking she had a case against big bully bevan until the truth set me freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
The moral of the story is that people will think what they want and try adn make the fact fit! Me anda colleague when sitting in the staff room minding our own business, were once told in the staff room by a support teacher that she bet we had seen the inside of a police cell at some stages of our lives! What because we looked like skin head soccer hooligans!!!! And many mornings on packed tubes - possibly as we were in PE kit (AKA hoodies) people would very often not sit next to us!!!! More room for us!

This country is dominated by a liberal minority which decides the agenda for the majority-These people are not normally elected by the people but appointed in their posts by the cronies in the government. Commonsense goes out of the window leading to detriment to the public at large Growth areas Elf & safety Political corrrectness Racism Diversity Courses Child protectiion All the above are very importent, but not to the exclusion of commonsense
A number of so called experts are making lots of money from the above and go out of their way to find issues to justify their existence

I have a similar problem to this except the PCSOs at Tower Hill seem to think I am a terrorist and have now insisted on making me empty my bag on the floor of the tube station on 4 seperate occasions - once or twice much to the ammusement of Sam! Admittedly on 2/3 of the occasions I was in a hoodie with a skin head and beard but on one occasion I was in a suit but carrying sports gear.

Funny isn't it that in todays PC society we often go to extreme lengths to avoid any kind of prejudice or discrimination. At the same time society as a whole still recognises certain types of people as 'looking dodgy' and therefore not to be trusted. I can't even begin to count the number of times in the UK i've been searched at airports or hassled by door security etc. Then when i came over to Finland the shoe was on the other foot and now that i'm an obvious foreigner i don't get any of the trouble anymore as that would be prejudice. On the downside all the scum bags want to fight me. Just last weekend for example i went to a bowling alley with a mixed group of friends and i hadn't even sat down at the lane before some bloke decided to have a pop. You just can't seem to win! best thing is to try to take it with a smile.
