Hello All!
My name is Veri and I would like to coach javelin boys and girls. Which is the best test that I can do to determine or select good kids that can throw far and be good JAVELIN throwers in the future?...
Regards!

Hi Veri it is good that you have decided to be a coach and better still that you have chosen javelin, the event of the Gods. How to find future distance throwers? phew that is the platinum question and if there was an answer to that one then I cannot give you the definite answer but there are guidelines. First is speed, ie, the most important factor in the javelin is speed of release so it follows that a "fast arm" is essential and you can always attain strength, mobility etc but a fast arm is down to genes. Second requirement is height in that all things being equal (which they never are) a good big one will always beat a good little one physically speaking of course. Ask the question "how tall are your parents" and if a ten year old has size ?? big feet then it is a good indicator that they are going to be tall as the feet grow first before the rest (I fool you not) but you get a gut feeling of a potential thrower, ie, the hair stands up on the back on the neck, it is instinctive, you will know when you see one. instant recognition. The standard Uka tests are the cricket ball throw, bleep test, sitting throw, etc, etc but these are subjective tests and are not that reliable so the answer to the question is, I suppose that there is "no best test" method and athletes are born not created. Just hope that one of these passes along your way but then again there is always the exception to the rule and this is what makes for the excitment of our sport. Good hunting and hope that you find that "superstar" we need em. This is just my pennyworth and others no doubt will have theirs. Cheers Brian
