Even with all the qualifications under the sun on a piece of paper saying you are a coach does not mean you are qualified! I have been "coached" by people with a piece of paper and by people who threw a stick! i must say i have learned far more from those with enthusiasm and experience than someone that thinks they know because they have some ink! I have not been involved in athletics for about 5 years because of a coach in my former club. He belittled me in front of others when i tackled him for embarrassing the club by shouting things at a competition (Slagging the other team). I was the captain of the team and felt it was my duty to voice the fact that he was bringing down the team. I was told by him that i was an incompetent little girl before he walked off. Later that day i broke my PB and the competition record 3 times. i think i must have been congratulated by every single person on both teams before he came over and said anything! I later stuck up for another member of my team and due to my actions was banned from competitions for 6 months and probation for a further 6 months by my club! A coach who acts like a spoilt brat and belittles those who attend the club is not a coach at all, a coach is someone who encourages you, gives you enthusiasm for your sport when you are down and helps you to bring out the best performance in your discipline. You do not need ink on paper to have those qualities and be a coach! sorry for the rant!

similar sort of thing, well kind of!!!........ at the intercounties in bedford last year i was watching the ladies javelin and there was this one chap stood next to me, i didn't know him and he didn't know me but anyway he coached one of the girls and she threw well by her standards and he was getting excited - fair enough but the girl must of had a red flag for the tail landing first on one of her throws and he was going a bit mad to say the least! he was going on about that he's a javelin thrower and a coach etc and i know the rules etc and it should have been allowed in!!!! which i can understand as i too would be upset if i thought one of my athletes throws was legal and then given a red flag..........so with all this excitement he then took it a stage further......there was this one girl and [perhaps she's on here] she ran up and stopped walked back to start of the runway and her time had ran out, she wasn't happy and she threw her javelin into the ground in the grass at the side of the run up, this guy then started shouting "get off!!!" and said something about her throwing the javelin into the grass and even joking with the girl he coached.........surely this had no concern of him, why was he shouting abuse, maybe he thought he was at a football match!!!? things like this shouldn't happen as it was obvious the girl was upset and she didn't need him giving more abuse, if anything should of been said to her it should of been done by the officials not some loud mouth know - it - all from outside the arena........

still he shouldn't of shouted "get off!!!" - it's the job of the officials to sort things out not people on the sidelines, that's fair enough about the holding up of another athlete, but i'm sure other athletes would understand - we are all in the same boat at the end of the day and it could happen and probably has happened to us all, people shouting and joking about it from outside the track are just being plain rude - they should joke about it in the way home in the car, not in front of the other athletes and spectators......
