you might be able to coach the technique but can you teach the thrower to channel their agression into the throw?
I found out tonight that i can....
Emma is under17 and has been throwing since december and has hit 28m once in training but since then she has strugled to throw 22m. she competed 2 weeks ago and threw 24m.
Tonight she was working on her run-up in preparation for the weekend. every throw went 20m even when i asked her to throw harder it still went 20m. i asked her why she comes training and she said that she comes to improve her throwing. I basically said that she was wasting her time,my time and her parents time as it didn't matter what i asked her to do it still went 20m everytime. i asked her to throw the paint off a 400g javelin. i told her that if she didn't ithen i never wanted to see her down the track again because she was wasting my time with a "can't be bothered" attitude. I really laid into her she got onto the run-up and smacked the hell out of the javelin - although she completely missed the point and it landed at 25m i handed her a 600g javelin and told her that she MUST do the same and she proceeded to smack the crap out of that as well and it landed at 28m again!!! RESULT!!! from that point on her worst throw was about 24m with the 600g.
Bone however has a tendency to throw with just his arm. He has had a terrible up bringing - born in uganda his father was murdered his mother dissapeared and he now lives with his aunt.
he was only training with the 500g jav tonight to allow him to throw hard and protect his arm at the same time
I got him to take all that went wrong with his life and everything that angered him and put it into the javelin then throw it as hard and as far as he could.
Well he hit this javelin so hard and it flew point down all the way to 39m kind of like doing a jab with the javelin but at high speed. when he came off the runway he was kind of shaking....the throw had completely taken everything out of him.
if he had hit it slightly nose up i swear that it would have gone 55m
so sometimes it pays to be a real nasty bastard to your athletes in order for them to realise their own potential and in some cases it just takes a little direction and advice as to what to think about that could make the thrower channel their agression.
