Ok I will start the ball rolling by introducing myself. I coach up in the North of the country (Sheffield and surrounding areas) and I am at present based in the new English Institute of Sports in Sheffield and have a great group of talented throwers and also a group of multi eventers who want to improve their jav. I am also keeping an eye on Mick Hill this year hoping for him to get to his fifth Olympics and I have got to say it is great fun working with the guy, he is good company and excellent for all those throwers around him. This time of year we are still into hard graft work and are utilising the nets in the EIS as much as possible. Thats about it no great secrets just hard work.

I coach a small group of throwers: Terry O'Leary 17th in U17 rankings last year with 52.80m and a Pb with the 800g of 43.93m he is now a junior man. Harry Tyler 2nd year u17 this year last year he threw 43.49m with the 700g in only his second season of throwing he is 15years old and 6ft1 (and left handed). He has the smothest hip drive that i have ever seen!! Pb with the 800g 38.52m (threw 42m last weekend in training) Emma Christmas started training in November. Has been throwing only once a week. When she started she was throwing about 20m and is now throwing 28m in training. A new lad called Bonny. joined my group 2 weeks ago he is a second year u15. He has the fastest arm that i have ever seen. he basically throws from a standing throw and hits about 45m with the 600g javelin.... a definate contender for the english schools this year!!!

Although not a coach, I am currently working with Mike McNeill and his group of throwers (Mark Roberson, Dave Parker, Goldie Sayers, Chloe Couzens, Stu Faben).
Just want to echo BEEPEE - has been great throwing with Mick this winter - shame he lacks the power to throw through the Jav netting at Manchester - he needs to work harder I would say - but he is great for motivation and extremely inspirational.

Haha we peppered the one at Sheff last night and added a few more, looks like a cullender, its probably due to all the extra throws that we screw in during the two hour period haha. Even Steve could not puncture it a couple of weeks ago so we are doing sommat right. Keep on ballet dancing Tom and get up Sheff way to add some of your own. Keep off the leverage and keep on the beverage.

It might have something to do wuth the fact the one in manchester isnt used that much! I go down once a month with a learning disability squad and the staff always struggling getting the netting out. They claim its because they dont have the practise Knowing some of the throwers yorkshire way im surprised they have a net left in Sheffield with the amount of spears that get thrown!

Howdy Motherhen, yes it is like a war zone most times to the amusement of the running fraternity and they are now putting up posters around the area to warn off stray sprinters and the like, there are javelins wedged everywhere. Sports city Manchester is an excellent venue to train at and its a shame that they are not taking advantage of the facilities whilst they can, we had a chance to try them out a few weeks ago hence Tom`s reference to them and there was only a couple of local javelineers turned up then., what a shame?. There has got to be talent out there it is just a matter of latching on to them, easier said than done I grant you.Its surprising how much fun you can have causing havoc with loose flying implements and Im always good for causing merriment trying to get my girth moving down the track at sub zero speed. I will look out for you next time we are over there, take care and train well. By the way the beepee is from my lot shouting me by my initials ie, BP do this BP do that, you get the idea, local horse?.

well i live 30 mins from sheffield and 30 mins from manchester and go to both cities for work each week but i have no idea how to get to the facilities, if i can use the facilities, how much they cost etc etc maybe thats why not many people go... not many people know especially not the guys at the bottom end of the distance ladder anyway. Any info would be welcomed.... especially as im off training tonight once again with no ability to throw indoors as there's no room or indoor facilities other than medicine balls and a shot net !....
on another note just so we can have a laugh at local stupidity in wakefield ..... the sports centre wakey harriers use to train and compete were lucky enough to secure the hammer net from the commonwealth games ! great you may think... but they had for a year and never put it up cos they said they didnt know how ! then a few weeks ago they sold it and promised to repair the existing net instead (im not making this up) we turned up a training a week ago expecting the hammer net to be down and us javelin throwers (all 2 of us) could have a quiet night and empty runway to concentrate...
when we got there we realised the local council had accidentally dug up the entire hammer area including the circle not just taken out the cage !!! so anyone reading this waiting to compete in hammer in wakefield early this season may have a wasted journey on there hands !
but seroiusly any tips or advice on how novices like me could get into these apparantly under used world class facilities would be appreciated.... if one more sprinter walks accross my run up practice i'll go mad ! by the way shouldnt it be field and track and not track and field afterall we are a damn site bigger and have weapons ! ;D

We could do with some good facilities in North London, Haringey has to be the best around with a good track and gym and is used by many athletes but you can never use the indoor facilities as its always booked. We had 4 regional throws squads at Haringey over the winter and could not use the indoors, as it was booked for footballers. It's not surprising that people don't turn up to the regional squads when the organisation and facilites are so poor, at the last one there was 5 throwers and 3 were from my group.

That doesnt surprise me. I used to go to Wakefield when I was up in Yorkshire. Facilities have a major problem of not always listening to people in the know or just listening when convient. The worse case is when workmen turn up and no athletics bods are on site. Thats when goofs like this happen.

Greetings,
First off, wonderful to see so many coachs checking out boards to help others along. I am a coach myself, although I'm at the junior high and high school levels. I threw shot and disc in jr high and high school but never got a chance to throw jav due to my high school not allowing it. I am currently coaching at a high school near where I live at and they offer jav. So, I am learning as much as the students are from yet another coach that's volunteering at the school.
It's a pleassure to meet you all and I hope to get the chance to share experiences and learn alot from you.

I was (& still am) a sprint/hurdles coach for my club for young athletes. My passion for the javelin started about 4 years ago when a specialist coach (John Waugh) came to give a javelin session. The total turnout from our athletes that day was zero & ended up as a fun session for my wife & myself - I was hooked!! The wife gave up when John told her she looked like a fairy elephant!!
Since then I have concentrated more on coaching javelin but also compete in the veterans league (& when their desperate throw for the mens team). I try to take part in any javelin session & encourage the athletes to coach me. I work with Woffy as often (but not often enough) as I can & really enjoy every session. Ant Lovett came with John to our last session & that was really good for the athletes to see a quality thrower (didn't demonstrate the throw from 4metres behind the line though!!).
We were lucky enough last year to bump into Nick Nieland on a warm weather training session in Portugal. He was kind enough to allow me to video his session & he then coached two of our athletes - what a nice guy!!
I was interested to see the comments about training facilities. At Ware we have access to a hall with nets where we can do throwing drills etc. There are also indoor shot & discus circles available. We booked the hall for every Tuesday night through the winter specifically for throwers. The response has been really eratic. Some nights we would have a good group but mostly it was poorly attended. The result is that next winter we will not be booking the hall as it has cost the club too much money. I have spoken with our cheif coach to see if there is any way we could open the facilities to others to get the numbers up to justify the cost.
I'll finish here with a quote from a fellow, slightly older, veteran during a competition:
"Every time I throw the javelin I think I'm throwing a part of me with it"
This explains why we older guys can't compete with the youngsters -were throwing more weight!!
