what about massage then? doesn't that help rid of waste products? i thought that the massage sort of helps get blood into the area to flush out crap? i've been having massage and my ass was tight as hell but with lots of "elbow digging" it's deffo better than before........apparently it had la bit of actic acid build up, which could be felt by the massage and described as a "crysatlization" sound right or not?

Feels gristly.if the muscle fibers are strands of spaghetti, theres a big blob of dried bolognese in there.
With massage, you're literally moving the blood and lymph fluids with your hand. Thats why the therapist should massage toward the glands and heart.
For an example, when scar tissue is forming or theres a build up of waste products, the therapist may work hard on the local area to break up the tissue. then do large movements toward the lymph nodes to get rid of the crap they've just dislodged.
then as the remaining scar tissue forms, we stretch the muscle so the tissue aligns with the muscle fibers. To do this the muscle needs to be warm so we do vigorous movements to get it up to temperature.
This is why we cant really do anything other than ice until 48 hrs after injury. If we massaged before this we would cause more bleeding and scar tissue.

So does this micro trauma really occur in general after high stress training- eg the feeling of stifness or is it more the case when you feel you have picked up an injury? What i am getting at is should we all really be ice bathing ourselves after a heavy training session? or should we only do it if we feel some genuine pain?

Yep, it does. Combination of this and lactic build up creates the DOM's which is the aching we feel after training. To burst capillaries you only have to pinch your skinn because they're so fine. So imagine whats happening to fibres and capillaries on a 1rm squat. Its entirely normal and the body is used to it. However, to get the extra percentages of recovery, cold treatment is a good idea. This is an extreme method - ice baths. Seen paula, england rugby and amir khan jump in these after training. Think you'd have to drug me to get me into one of these. www.squashsite.co.uk/k/kaleidoscope5.htm

When Lee McConnell was warm weather training, her coach used to wash out some bins, then fill them with cold water.
