Ok i've stopped moping about now and have recaptured the spear bug As i can't do anything upper body wise for a few weeks i'm going to concentrate on running, sprints and jumps. That might actually be a very good thing as i've had so many ankle and Achilles problems over the last few years that i've really neglected that side of my training. All is good in the leg department now though for the first time in a long time so here goes. I'll be at it 3-4 times per week as recovery allows. I won't be putting a training plan up on the site this year as i don't need the extra pressure and i'm aiming to come back with perfect smooth technique with a big emphasis on condition and health as opposed to raw power as before so Watch this space...

I just had my latest checkup and i've got to wait another month before i can start to apply any load with my arm oh well atleast that gives me more time to work on my legs.

Well the elbow does now feel stable but there has been little change in ROM in the last 2 weeks although the muscle tissue has mostly filled out once again leaving it only about 4cms thinner in circumference than my left. I now have about 40/165 degrees compared with my left arm that has 30/180 so there is still some way to go. After next week i am permitted to stretch it passively and begin some easy weight training so i hope i will be able to regain the rest of the ROM then and start to get some condition back into the joint. Just a side note but i've been doing alot of leg work to keep me occupied and i am now faster and fitter then i've been in years so atleast something positive has come out of this. I will try to keep the momentum going and if all goes to plan i will be super fast (compared to before) when i return

hows that ROM going now wez? and the weights..how have they been?

Rom is getting there, now only about 10 degrees missing. As to weights, it has been nice to get back into it although the heaviest i have done with any arm exercise so far is 20kg so its going a good while yet before i am back to normal. There is no point in trying to throw anything until i have about 75% of the strength back and i won't go near a jav until i have achieved 95% of my previous strength levels.
I think i will be training fully within 3 months realistically assuming there are no complications

Hey Wez
I've read this thread but don't understand how you've done this to yourself. You hint that you may have ignored some warning signs so what were they and what sort of training was causing them (eg were you throwing heavily balls a great deal in the months leading up to it?).
Good luck with the recovery!
Tony

Hi Tony,
The warning sign i ignored was debilitating elbow pain, i seem to be particularly prone to dismissing what i would call niggles but another person might see a doctor about. Just last year i had my wisdom teeth out after overlooking the fact that they had been infected for months.
I'm not too quick off the mark you might say, anyway I'm fairly sure it was caused by javelin throwing only. After it began to get worse i felt the pain during most exercises especially bent arm pullovers, back jerk, and bench press.
I have experienced the pain on and off for the last 2-3 years but usually happenstance has allowed me to recover, eg holidays and other training breaks. I had thought it was tendon related as i have torn the ligaments there a few years back and thats why i ignored it.
The whole thing has probably been brought on by the reduction in shoulder mobility i have experienced since tear my elbow ligaments and all the other training i have done with insufficient stretching.
Its easy to be wise after the event, but thats one very good reason to post it up here so other people don't do the same thing. I have to point out that i know of 2 other javelin throwers who have done exactly the same thing and 2 who have broken the other bone.

Got an appointment next tuesday with an orthopedic surgeon to decide if the pins are ready to come out, if so (which i hope) it should happen sometime in the next month.
