my back felt so much better this evening that i did a 30min work out in the gym followed by a 45min throwing session.. I've now thrown hard 5 times in 9days..! I have never thrown so much even when i was a young whipper snapper... This is crazy..

Sam - tbh this could be part of your problem. Doing 5 hard throwing sessions in 9 days will do any athlete some harm. And to be quite frank (no insult intended here) but you are not in the sort of shape to be doing this. As you say you are not so young now and a tad de-conditioned so you may want to ease back a bit.
The enthusiasm you show is great, which is very commendable, but is it the best example to set your athletes?

Hi Sam, I winced when I read how many throwing sessions you were doing in such a short time! I'm not surprised your back complained. I know I am a lot older but I have realised you ignore the messages your body is sending at your peril. Back in May 2005, I slipped a disc through extreme gardening followed by bounding at training the next day. I affected my sciatic nerve (it still is wingey!) and I had to train my left leg to run again. I was lucky to be on the runway at all that summer let alone compete for GB masters. Now I find I cannot throw, do weights or bound on successive days. In fact I schedule these activities over a 2 week period making sure there is a recovery time between. I also place a hot water bottle in the small of my back after one of these sessions which helps more than ice did. I can do running work, med ball, core work etc straight after with no ill effect. But I have to sleep on my right side. Lying on my left or back makes my left leg and foot hurt. However, I do find the extra hours of sunshine, the smell of newly cut grass does get my throwing juices going and all I want to do is throw. Enthusiasm and thoughts of competing can be quite extreme after a long winter!!! So take it easy Sam, there's 6 months of competition ahead - don't spend it laid up.

i'm actually supprised at how much i have been able to do.
I threw hard on the following days
Sunday 8th Tuesday 10th Thursday 12th Saturday 14th Monday 16th I did a gym session on monday 9th and missed my gym session on the 11th.
out of all the "rest days" the day i felt the worst was sunday 15th. despite having a pain in the back.
on the sunday 8th i threw a measured 51.35m from a 7 step approach Last night i threw a measured 51.40m from a 7 step approach.
today my knees are sore my muscles are a little stingy from the weights and other than that i feel good... my "hard throwing" sessions are obviously not as hard as they should be...

what sort of volumes do you consider hard? Or is it just high intensity for a few throws?

i've done this a few times over the years.
i would choose to do this type of thing if weekly throwing sessions didn't seem to be progressive and just felt as though each session was going through the motions so to speak - it deffo shakes things up a bit and gives your throwing a kick start.
i called this me doing a "month's throwing in a week!" and certainly by the end of the 4 or 5 quick succession sessions i felt my technique was sharper and had a clearer thinking about what i was doing, i then found it possible to have a long lay off from throwing - a month or so and found that my throwing would be where it left off in that clear, sharper state with the added bonus of being very throwing fresh and biting at the bit to hold a javelin again, which is fantastic in itself and lends it self to good sessions.
certainly it is punishing on the body if the throwing is intense - i would feel like i'd been in a car crash by the end of the week and of course that's not a good place to be, but it did what i wanted it to do and i thought it was an ok risk to take.
so basically it was a quick fix of lots of quanity to improve quality and once quality was achieved it was far less often and more than not the quality stayed.

i will say that out of the 5 sessions i did 3 of them were better than all the other sessions i have had this winter. I think to be able to achieve a good session where progress is being made when you are shot to bits will lead to an even better outcome when feeling fresh.
as i have said i am going to lay off throwing till the weekend and then probably throw again next tuesday and then compete the following weekend in my season opener.
as for the volumes...
last night for example i did about 3 sets of 5 step throws using 5 javelins.. the first set was easy and got the creases ironed out.. distance was about 40-43m then as the sets went on i hit them harder and harder and came in faster and faster.. as the session went on i dropped javelins and ended up just using 2 per "round" my best throw of the night i actually dragged the tail but the hit was, other than that much cleaner and faster. had i not dragged the tail i am sure it would have been a 53/54m throw..
I have 3 aims for my throwing this year (this is turning into another topic....)
1. stay tall throughout the throw keeping my bum tucked in. 2. actually run off my left and hold onto my right foot and drive forwards into my left block 3. get inside the javelin as i have a tendency to throw around the side making the javelin curve left. last night i was executing these better than ever but not anywhere near where they will/should be by the end of the season.
