thank you very much for that insight wez........really appreciate the in depth explanations of your situation and the remedies used........my back problems that i've had are since easter monday 2002, since that time there has been no time in which my back has felt "normal" - ie back to full health, i've done all the usual routes of physio, osteopath, chiropractor, steroidal injections, acupuncture and even bought an expensive bloody tempur bed - nothing has helped........i'm booked in on wednesday to see a masseur who the wife sees and i'm hoping that maybe this will help? i'm thinking that maybe my back is always tight/stiff whatever and this regular relaxing/freeing of a few things could do the trick....... .......something which i have got which works for me is a boots TENS machine, it certainly eases the pain when my back's in spasm and if a little sore/stiff/achie it helps work the muscles slightly to loosen them abit, would recommend anyone to try one. at the end of day i really want to improve the situation of my back as it really does affect my life, as it dictates what i can and can't do - last night i was at a friends BBQ and we had a awesome break dancing compilation CD on, you know what a slinger's like when it comes to dancing ;D - well this morning the ol' back feels as if a heard of obese elephants have trampled all over it......

Break dancing eh? Thats funny when i've had a few i seem to think i can do it too Although i can do backflips and Bruce Lee style flip ups (only when i've had a few) which always impresses people just so long as they don't watch what happens inbetween If you are 'stupid' enough to go break dancing etc and do the occasional throw then it can't be tooooooooooo bad- even though you pay for it later. Also the fact that your back responds to the TENS machine is definately a positive in terms of rehab, that is basically a non impact form of exercise. There are other things too which are supposed to be aces for the lower back like Water jogging with one of those comical waist float jobs. Also hanging knee and leg raises spring to mind. The thing is with all this stuff you really have to put alot of effort into it and do it all the time for it to work because there is no miracle cure. Its only consistent and dedicated effort that will get you back on track. I did all these rehab exercises and stretches twice a day for 30mins+ thats quite a bit of time and effort. The end result has been that i went up from 13 to 14 stone with only trunk and abdominal exercises!!!! I do look like abit of a beast with my shirt off if you ignore the scrawny arms and legs etc- I am absolutely posiitive that it is the extra muscles bunched around my lower back and trunk that stave off the back trouble because they give alot of support and reduce the movement in my spinally weak areas. One last word. What i have learned from my road to recovery is this. Massage, physio, osteopathy, chiropractors, accupuncture, stretching etc (i've done them all) Are only ever the beginning to solving the problems and if you ask them and they are honest they will agree. All they do is make you feel good in the short term- it is only by doing the required exercises supporting the treatment- reconditioning your area of weakness then maintaining that condiditioning that will really make a long term difference. In simple terms treatment makes you feel good for a few days or a few hours- so in that time stretch your back out until it is supple enough and then do some rehab exercise to strengthen the muscles and bit by bit it will improve. In my treatment phase i had back manipulations for about 18 months at first 3 times per week then twice then once then once per month, i did the rehab all the time and eventually i didn't need any manipulations to feel good- i could achieve that with just the stretching. Now i rarely even need to do the specific stretches. HOOOOORAAAHHH ;D ;D ;D ;D cue Roy Castle with "dedications what you need"

great stuff wez, really inspirational stuff............it's like there's a light at the end of the tunnel listening to you, it really gives me hope.
it's just after 4 and a bit years you kind of lose hope and it gets you down, as i can't remember what it's like for the back to feel normal.........
thank you wez once again.

One more thing- i can't leave this topic alone cos its what i've spent the greatest portion of my time doing but here we go anyway.
So called 'Orthopedic' beds are a load of s**te in my opinion i have tried a whole bunch and i still wakeup stiff. What i did is bought a cheap as hell foam matress from Ikea that my girlfriend finds comfortable then slashed my side of it open ripping out all of the inner foam leaving just 2 cm of ripple foam ontop then stuffed it with mega hard camping matresses(they do not give way atall) and hey presto the best bed i've ever slept on!!
The only time i really wakeup stiff and miserable nowadays is when i have to go away somewhere and sleep on another bed- but if it gets too bad i just sleep on the floor with a duvet under me just to make it a bit more comfortable.
There we go thats all my secrets revealed.
